Overview of the Canadian Peat Industry

Peat and Peatlands is the authoritative information platform of the Canadian Peat industry, built around the Canadian Sphagnum Peat Moss Association (CSPMA) and the practical operations of peat producers across nine Canadian provinces. Building on more than 90 years of Canadian peat industry development, the platform integrates industry data, technical standards, and certification systems to advance Responsible Peatland Management and the science-based use of peat resources. It serves as a key industry portal for North American horticulture, agriculture, and ecological conservation stakeholders.

Nearly a Century of Development and Association Founding

The Canadian Peat industry began commercializing horticultural peat nearly a century ago, with most peat historically imported from Scandinavian countries, the Netherlands, and Germany. After traditional European supply was interrupted by the Second World War, the modern era of Canadian peat extraction began in Alberta, Manitoba, Quebec, and New Brunswick. Over the following decades, operations expanded to Saskatchewan, Ontario, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland, covering nine provinces in total. The late 1960s and early 1970s brought three major changes: the shift from block cutting to vacuum harvesting, the introduction of ready-to-use potting soils and growing mixes, and increased automation of plant operations and bale handling.

Canadian Peat Resources and Sustainable Extraction

Canada holds 119 million hectares of peatlands, representing roughly 13% of the country’s land area and 27% of the world’s peatlands, storing more carbon than any other land-based ecosystem. The industry’s total footprint covers only 36,032 hectares, less than 0.03% of all Canadian peatlands. Within that footprint, 60% is currently in production, 11% is awaiting restoration, 22% has been restored, and 7% has been reclaimed for other uses. Each year, approximately 11.3 million cubic metres of peat is extracted, primarily for professional growing mixes and potting soils, supported by an industry-academic partnership that began in 1992 at the Peat Research Centre in New Brunswick.

Veriflora Certification and CanRePeat Restoration Project

The Veriflora Responsibly Managed Peatlands certification, issued by SCS Global Services, is the leading international standard for responsible peat production. It ensures best management practices across ecological protection, biodiversity, water resources, worker safety, and community relations. As of 2026, approximately 80% of total Canadian peat extracted annually is certified under the Veriflora program. From 2022 to 2025, CSPMA partnered with Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) on the CanRePeat project, geo-surveying over 6,000 hectares of historically extracted peatlands across Canada, restoring 227 hectares, and securing 55 hectares through land trusts and conservation easements.

Industry Data and Future Direction

The current CSPMA President is Asha Hingorani, with the association headquartered in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. CSPMA was founded in 1988 by leading Canadian peat producers, with Gerry Hood serving as the first President for 20 years and establishing the foundation of the industry-academic partnership. Through responsible extraction practices, strict regulatory compliance, the Veriflora third-party certification, and ecological restoration projects such as CanRePeat, the Canadian Peat industry continues to provide reliable peat-based growing media for North American horticulture while preserving vital peatland ecosystem services for generations to come.
