History of the WCFS and the Two-Club Legacy of the South African Fuchsia Society

The Western Cape Fuchsia Society (WCFS) is one of the two regional clubs that has been long associated with the South African Fuchsia Society (SAFS). Around 2016, at the height of the network, the website jointly carried information, show schedules and member resources for the Western Cape club and the Fourways Fuchsia Club in northern Johannesburg. After a quiet editorial refresh around 2018, the SAFS national branding was retired and the site was handed to the Western Cape club to run on its own; today WCFS is the only branch in the SAFS network that still organises an annual public show.

Show and Member Workshop Calendar

The highlight of the WCFS calendar is the Annual Fuchsia Show, held at the end of November or the first week of December in the greater Cape Town area. This tradition has run for more than twenty years, with plants judged in classes split by cultivar, training style and grower experience, so beginners and seasoned members show side by side. New members are offered hands-on workshops on pinching, pruning and taking cuttings throughout the year; the annual subscription includes eight workshops, a monthly raffle, technical notes and refreshments. The 2024 show was held in the grounds of Christchurch, Constantia, took in 136 entries and produced a manager’s report covering layout, judging and the need for more tables the following year.

A Cultivation Library Built Around 20,000-Plus Cultivars

The site devotes almost all of its content to “how to grow a fuchsia well,” with month-by-month notes on pinching, pruning, watering and feeding, plus a complete pest and disease section covering aphids, whitefly, mealy bug, red spider mite, botrytis, rust, root rot, hawk moth caterpillars and a winter white-oil spray regimen. The cultivation library notes that more than 20,000 different fuchsia cultivars are known worldwide, each with its own colour, flower form, foliage, size, growth habit and climatic preference. Sub-pages walk readers through bush fuchsias, hanging baskets, standards, miniature forms, variegated foliage and a FAQ, with companion notes on environmentally friendly pest control.

Ties with the British, American and Dutch Fuchsia Societies

The WCFS Links page lists the British Fuchsia Society, the American Fuchsia Society and the Nederlandse Kring van Fuchsiavrienden as overseas sister societies, and quotes former BFS president and long-standing member Leo Boullemier: “Growing fuchsias for exhibition offers a challenge and requires dedication. But it is neither difficult nor mysterious.” Photographs on the site were originally taken at the Lady Beth Nursery, a Western Cape institution that shut in February 2014; the home page now credits a new set of photographers and continues to refresh the gallery each season.

Joining the Society as a Member or a Country Member

WCFS designs every show and every workshop to be repeatable for newcomers: visitors at the public show pay a small entry fee (R20 in 2024, with a raffle ticket included), pick up cultural notes at the information table and buy cultivars not normally stocked by nurseries. Members enjoy eight hands-on workshops, a monthly raffle, written cultural notes and refreshments, while members who live outside the Cape Town bowl — in Stellenbosch, George or the wider Western Cape — or even in Johannesburg can sign up as Country Members and receive the quarterly bulletin by post or download. The Western Cape Fuchsia Society therefore serves both the local Cape Town grower and the South African fuchsia enthusiast who lives far from the show grounds.
