About the Nursery
De Bolderik Wilde Bloemzaden is a Dutch wildflower seed specialist founded in 1987, one of the earliest small family-run nurseries in the Netherlands to focus entirely on propagating seeds of native, autochthonous wildflowers. Originally based in the province of North Holland, the nursery built its reputation on the idea that real biodiversity restoration needs locally sourced wildflower seed, not commercial horticultural mixes. In early 2023 De Bolderik was acquired by Unitura, the Dutch ecological restoration and seed company, but the De Bolderik brand, plant lines and seed production team continue to operate under their own name.
Product Lines and Seed Mixes
De Bolderik currently produces seed of more than 300 native plant species and uses them to build more than 30 different wildflower mixes for specific situations. The standard catalogue includes natural wildflower meadow seed, butterfly-friendly mix, bee-friendly mix, general ecological mix, green-manure mix, cut-flower mix, edible-flower mix, field-flower mix, roof-greening mix, shrub-edge mix, reed-bed and riverbank mix, and low-growing mix. Customers can also buy single species directly, or commission custom mixes for larger projects.
Ecological Position and Seed Sourcing
De Bolderik is firmly “autochtone inheemse” (locally native): every seed batch is collected from natural residual populations in the Netherlands, with the landowner’s consent, and is grown out on the nursery before being cleaned and packaged. Commercial cultivars and non-native seed sources are deliberately avoided, which fits the wider Dutch and European ecological-restoration movement that requires genetically appropriate local seed for habitat work. The nursery is a member of the European Native Seed Producers Association (E.N.S.P.A.) and of the Dutch Vakgroep Wilde Weelde network, which keeps it connected to other European native-seed producers and to the wider ecological-gardening community in the Netherlands.
Post-Acquisition Focus
After the early-2023 Unitura takeover, De Bolderik stopped selling loose seed to individual customers directly; the retail side is handled through Unitura’s seed-shop channels. The De Bolderik side has narrowed its focus to large ecological-restoration projects, local authority contracts and bulk supply to landscape designers. The 30-plus seed mixes and 300-plus species library are all preserved, and propagation and harvest are still run by the same specialist seed grower. In the long run, De Bolderik’s role inside Unitura is “the core local-native seed production capacity” plus “the bulk-supply backbone for restoration projects”, while home gardeners continue to buy the same De Bolderik-branded seed mixes through Unitura and its retailers.
Customers, Visits and Site
The seed goes to three main groups: local authorities and water boards (for dyke, wetland and nature-reserve restoration), landscape designers and ecological contractors (for parks, road verges, roof gardens and corporate low-maintenance plantings), and home gardeners (who want a small butterfly- or bee-friendly corner at home). Habitat-restoration projects have strict rules about seed provenance, and De Bolderik’s “documented local source” reputation is exactly what those projects need. The site is primarily a working production nursery and does not open to casual visitors, but it does run a small number of pre-booked trial-field open days in the summer and autumn flowering season, so landscape designers and council staff can see how each mix performs in the field. The site is in the North Holland polder area, easy to reach by car from Amsterdam, Haarlem or Alkmaar within an hour. All in all, De Bolderik is a typical “quiet champion” of the Dutch wildflower-meadow movement: private gardeners may not have heard of it, but almost every Dutch city and nature-reserve wildflower-meadow project is likely to have De Bolderik’s seed somewhere in its seed mix.
