协会维护的 PBS Wiki 是一部持续扩充的球根植物百科，截至当前采用 pmwiki 2.3.31 版本，条目涵盖数千种球根植物的照片与栽培信息、相关气候带与可获取种源的整理、球根类书籍的参考书目，以及关于「遗存球根」（legacy bulbs）等主题的章节。Wiki 的照片多由会员在自家花园与野外拍摄，中心栏目是按物种与属编排的照片与资料索引；此外协会还在 iNaturalist 设立专题项目、运营 YouTube 频道与 Instagram 账号，让这些影像资源可以被更多公众检索与观赏。

专项资助与社区参与

为支持球根植物的基础研究、田野调查、保育、教育与园艺发现，协会自 2025 年起每年公开征集「Mary Sue Ittner 球根研究资助」（Mary Sue Ittner Grant for Bulb Research），2025 年度申请截止时间为 3 月 31 日，资助对象限定为 PBS 会员。协会曾资助出版《The Genus Hippeastrum（Amaryllidaceae）in Bolivia》，这部由 Raúl F. Lara Rico 等玻利维亚学者基于 12 年田野研究撰写的专著，是该国 Hippeastrum 属的首部完整专著。董事会由 14 名成员组成，分别负责主席、副主席、财务、会员、球根交换、种子交换、欧洲事务、地区联络与议事记录等具体事务。

Overview and Organization

The Pacific Bulb Society (PBS) was organized in the spring of 2002 in California as a federally recognized 501(c)3 non-profit organization, incorporated in California under registration number 3736762 and assigned federal EIN 47-2708584. Despite the word “Pacific” in its name, the society serves bulb enthusiasts worldwide, including everyone interested in true bulbs, corms, rhizomes, tubers, and other geophytes, and welcomes members ranging from casual gardeners to professional botanists at major botanical gardens.

Publications, Membership, and Forum

Paid members receive a quarterly print publication titled The Bulb Garden, which features color-illustrated articles on bulb-related topics, and a membership directory is produced every other year. In parallel, the society runs a free, public-facing e-mail discussion list (The PBS List) and a Simple Machines-based PBS Forum, where members and visitors share photographs, cultivation experience, and announcements related to the Bulb and Seed Exchange. Dues were raised in 2024 to US $25 per year for members in the United States and US $30 per year for members in other countries; new members joining on or after October 1 receive the remainder of the current calendar year plus one full additional year.

Bulb and Seed Exchange History

The Bulb and Seed Exchange (BX and SX) is the most distinctive member benefit. From July 2002 through November 2019 the society ran 463 BX offerings, totaling more than 9,500 items, with Dell Sherk managing offerings 1 through 433 (2002—2017) and Albert Stella managing 434 through 463 (2018—2019). Eleven SX offerings were issued between October 2014 and January 2019, initially organized by Steve Marak and later taken over by Dell Sherk. In September 2020, a separate EU Seed and Bulb Exchange was launched, based in Germany and open only to members with a postal address within the European Union, distributing material twice yearly and dominated by Iridaceae, Asparagaceae, and Amaryllidaceae.

Wiki Knowledge Base and Photo Resources

The society maintains the PBS Wiki, an ever-expanding member-written encyclopedia about flower bulbs, currently running on pmwiki 2.3.31. The wiki gathers thousands of species entries with photographs taken in members’ own gardens and in the wild, along with cultivation guidance, climate-zone notes, a bibliography of bulb literature, and a section on legacy bulbs. The wiki’s centerpiece is its photographic index by species and genus; an iNaturalist project, a YouTube channel, and an Instagram account extend the same image-driven approach to broader audiences.

Grants and Community Engagement

To support basic research, field work, conservation, education, and horticultural discoveries related to bulbs, the society operates the Mary Sue Ittner Grant for Bulb Research, an annual competitive grant open to PBS members, with the 2025 application deadline of March 31. The society has also supported publication of the monograph “The Genus Hippeastrum (Amaryllidaceae) in Bolivia,” a twelve-year field study by Bolivian researchers and the first complete monograph of the genus in that country. A fourteen-member board oversees the work, covering the presidency, vice presidency, treasury, membership, bulb exchange, seed exchange, European affairs, regional coordination, and the secretary role.
