佛罗里达州盆景协会（Bonsai Societies of Florida，简称 BSF）成立于 1973 年 9 月 15 日，是美国第一个州级盆景联合组织。成立大会在佛罗里达州坦帕举行，十个已组建的佛罗里达盆景协会派出代表出席，会后由 BSF 主办了当年的首届佛罗里达州盆景大会。1975 年 7 月 2 日至 6 日，BSF 在迈阿密主办了 1975 国际盆景大会；此后国际盆景大会曾两次重返佛罗里达，其中 1993 年与世界盆景友谊联合会世界盆景大会合并举办。该州的盆景社群可追溯到更早的年代：1964 年迈阿密盆景协会成立，是佛罗里达第一个盆景俱乐部；1965 年坦帕地区的 Suncoast 盆景协会、1967 年罗德岱堡地区的金海岸盆景协会相继成立；1969 年又有彭萨科拉海湾海岸盆景协会、博卡拉顿地区的灯塔盆景协会和中佛罗里达盆景俱乐部先后组建。1970 年 11 月，知名盆景艺术家 John Naka 首次东行到访灯塔盆景协会举办工作坊。BSF 的成立正是源于这些早期俱乐部希望联合主办国际盆景大会的需求。协会标志树是一株双干落的羽杉（Taxodium distichum），由时任 BSF 主席 Joseph N. Historical Evolution
The Bonsai Societies of Florida (BSF) was founded on September 15, 1973 in Tampa, Florida, when delegates from ten existing Florida bonsai societies gathered for an organizational meeting. The first Florida State Bonsai Convention followed later that year under BSF’s auspices. From July 2 to 6, 1975, BSF hosted the International Bonsai Congress ’75 in Miami; the international event returned to Florida twice afterward, and in 1993 it was held jointly with the World Bonsai Friendship Federation’s World Bonsai Convention. The Florida bonsai community traces back further: the Bonsai Society of Miami, formed in 1964, was the state’s first club; Suncoast Bonsai Society in the Tampa area followed in 1965, the Gold Coast Bonsai Society was organized in the Fort Lauderdale area in 1967, and the Pensacola Gulf Coast Bonsai Society, the Lighthouse Bonsai Society in the Boca Raton area, and the Central Florida Bonsai Club were all established in 1969. In November 1970, the renowned bonsai artist John Naka made his first trip east to conduct a workshop for the Lighthouse Bonsai Society. BSF’s founding grew out of these clubs’ wish to jointly host an international convention. The BSF logo tree is a double-trunked bald cypress (Taxodium distichum), collected by then-BSF President Joseph N. Samuels in Palm Beach County on New Year’s Day 1970. Five feet tall at collection, the tree spent two years in a sixteen-inch round training pot before being moved to a rectangular brown pot that highlighted its feathery foliage. It died in the late 1970s; an effort is now underway to graft whips onto the old trunks to bring the historic tree back. As the first statewide bonsai organization in the United States, BSF later helped California enthusiasts establish a comparable body and participated in forming the Southeastern Bonsai Federation, which covers ten states.
Purpose and Services
BSF is a 501(c)3 tax-exempt educational organization dedicated to encouraging and promoting the traditional art of bonsai throughout Florida and into neighboring southeastern states. Its program is structured around eight pillars: an annual convention, a visiting speakers program, scholarships, educational programs, permanent collections, district representation, publications, and the website. The annual convention is the centerpiece of BSF activity, held typically over Memorial Day weekend in Orlando. It brings together bonsai artists, hobbyists, vendors, and club representatives for demonstrations, hands-on workshops, a bazaar of plants and supplies, and the Club Night creative competition. The 2026 convention took place May 22 to 24 at the Florida Hotel and Conference Center, themed “small” with a curated exhibition of mame, shohin, and chuhin compositions. The visiting speakers program invites bonsai artists from across the United States and abroad to conduct workshops and demonstrations at Florida clubs. Through Club Night and other channels, BSF awards annual scholarships to encourage promising artists to continue their bonsai education and bring their learning back to local clubs. Publications and Member Benefits
Florida Bonsai is BSF’s official publication, issued four times a year. It carries articles on bonsai techniques and sources for related materials. The association also produces annual convention keepsake volumes; the 2025 BSF Convention Creative Exhibit Book is a 128-page paperback, with approximately five dollars from each sale supporting BSF. BSF membership falls into three categories: members joining through a local club (Primary or Secondary), Members at Large for those not affiliated with a Florida club, and lifetime members. At-Large membership costs fifteen dollars per year and includes a subscription to Florida Bonsai plus eligibility to register for the annual convention, though At-Large members may not vote or hold office. Members of BSF-affiliated clubs become BSF members automatically upon payment of local and state dues. Beginning in 2026, BSF introduced a Members Perk program: paid members in good standing may observe one day of demonstrations or workshops at the annual convention at no additional charge. Member Clubs and Organizational Structure
BSF serves as the umbrella volunteer organization for twenty-seven member clubs, Members at Large, and study groups across Florida, with a total membership exceeding 650. Member clubs are distributed across eight BSF districts, each represented by a trustee who maintains communication with the local clubs and reports their concerns upward. Representative member clubs include the Tallahassee Bonsai Society, the North Florida Bonsai Club, the Gainesville Bonsai Society, Hukyu Bonsai Society in Clearwater, Suncoast Bonsai Society, Bonsai Society of Brevard, Central Florida Bonsai Club, KAWA Bonsai Society, Bonsai Society of Southwest Florida, Ichiban Bonsai Kai, Sho Fu Bonsai Society of Sarasota, Bonsai Society of the Palm Beaches, Treasure Coast Bonsai Society, Lighthouse Bonsai Society, and the Heathcote Botanical Gardens study group. Governance is vested in a board of directors elected from the membership, alongside the eight district trustees and various standing committees covering membership, scholarships, Epcot, conventions, publications, and the website. Two annual honors recognize distinguished service: the T. Morris Lifetime Achievement Award, established in the 2002-2003 convention year for individuals with at least twenty years of continuous service, which carries an engraved plaque, certificate, and lifetime membership; and the Thomas Zane Legacy Award, presented to up to three recipients each year for at least fifteen years of contribution to bonsai teaching and improvement in Florida. In 2026 the scholarship fund was renamed the Michael G. Knowlton Scholarship Fund, awarding fifteen hundred dollars in annual scholarships at the convention.
Annual Convention and Industry Influence
The annual convention is BSF’s flagship gathering and Florida’s largest bonsai event. The 2026 convention set records across multiple measures: number of trees exhibited, attendees, Intro to Bonsai classes, and volunteers. The program includes headliner demonstrations, vendor workshops and critiques, the Club Night creative competition where clubs assemble finished bonsai compositions from raw materials within a three-hour window, and a closing auction. Recent convention headliners include Jesus Brito, a Venezuelan-born artist recognized for Best Tropical Tree at the U.S. National Bonsai Exhibition, and Sergio Cuan, a Cuban-American artist known for refined deciduous work and meticulous ramification. The spring Epcot display, mounted in partnership with Walt Disney World, runs for several months each year and is a major public-facing showcase for Florida bonsai art. As the first statewide bonsai organization in the United States, BSF has played an important coordinating role in the American bonsai community. It helped California enthusiasts establish a comparable statewide body and participated in forming the Southeastern Bonsai Federation, which spans ten states.
