历史沿革
苏格兰西南部 Galloway 地区一处 12 英亩现代花园与树木园，地处斯特兰拉尔（Stranraer）附近邓拉吉特（Dunragit）高地上 300 英尺处，南眺卢斯湾（Luce Bay）、加洛韦海角（Mull of Galloway）以及马恩岛（Isle of Man）。1971 年，比尔·诺特（Bill Knott）与夫人特莎·诺特-辛克莱（Tessa Knott-Sinclair）通过电话购入 103 英亩荒地，初见时只见沼泽、石南与零星柳树围绕一座原属邓拉吉特庄园的乔治王时代水库。一家人 1974 年正式迁居此地，1979 年在邻近的洛根植物园（Logan Botanic Garden）启发下开始建造花园。
园区布局与海景
花园主园区占地约 12 英亩，顺山坡铺展而下，主题被官方概括为”俯瞰水面”（looking down on water），园内两个小湖（Lochans）成为视觉焦点，四周以针叶树与落叶树屏风围挡海风，形成受墨西哥湾流增温影响的小气候。园区之上另辟 17 英亩野生花草步道（Moorland Walk），沿步道两侧有 120 余种野花、观赏草与蕨类，并保留原始石南灌丛作为对比；山顶端立有由小到大递减堆叠石球组成的”和平尖塔”（Peace Pinnacle）雕塑，游客可由此远眺海湾。
植物收藏与特色
得益于墨西哥湾流增温与 pH 6.5 的酸性土壤，园内栽种了大量来自南半球的耐寒植物，原产自中国的山茶、杜鹃花与木兰亦长势良好，自 1979 年起逐步发展为以杜鹃花科、欧石南类植物为主，辅以玉兰、绣球、桉树、新西兰 Olearias 灌木以及冬青、桦木、针叶树等稀有乔灌木的家族式收藏。园方整理了一份编号树木小径（Tree Trail），将 150 余种乔木按编号串联，供爱好者按图索骥。
参观服务与设施
花园全年开放，4 月至 9 月可在园内茶室（Tearoom）购票或在线预订，10 月至次年 3 月改设入口处诚信盒与二维码购票。茶室以自制汤品、烘焙与园中自产蔬菜、当地食材为特色，并附设小型苗圃，出售自繁自育的耐寒植物。园方铺设了带编号的图示园区地图，方便访客穿行于不同区块、林缘步道、湖岸雕塑与野生花草区之间。
历史与保护认定
2023 年 8 月 23 日，苏格兰历史环境管理局（Historic Environment Scotland, HES）将格伦万花园与树木园纳入《花园与设计景观名录》（Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes），登记编号 GDL00411，定级为”近现代设计景观”（Designed Landscapes of the Recent Past）。HES 报告指出该园具有”杰出的艺术价值”与”较高的园艺价值”，原圣安德鲁斯植物园荣休园长鲍勃·米切尔（Bob Mitchell OBE）亦曾撰文称赞其为”苏格兰最具现代精神的花园”。
History
Glenwhan Gardens & Arboretum occupies a 12-acre site 300 feet above sea level near Dunragit, Stranraer, Dumfries and Galloway, with southern views across Luce Bay and the Mull of Galloway toward the Isle of Man. In 1971, Bill Knott and Tessa Knott-Sinclair bought 103 acres of rough Galloway moorland over the telephone, sight unseen; the family moved to Galloway in 1974, and Tessa began shaping the present garden in 1979 after a visit to nearby Logan Botanic Garden on the Rhins of Galloway.
Layout & Sea Views
The main garden runs down the slope under the motif of ‘looking down on water’, with two small lochans (ponds) anchoring the design and shelter belts of conifers and deciduous trees screening the sea wind. A 17-acre Moorland Walk above the cultivated gardens preserves a contrast with the original moorland and carries more than 120 species of wildflowers, grasses and ferns, while a stack of diminishing stone balls known as the Peace Pinnacle sculpture marks the highest point with views back over the bays.
Plant Collections
Warmed by the Gulf Stream and rooted in acidic pH 6.5 soil, the garden grows tender plants from the Southern Hemisphere alongside ericaceous plants from China. The collection centres on species rhododendrons and azaleas, with magnolias, camellias, hydrangeas, eucalyptus, Embothrium (Chilean fire bush) and New Zealand Olearias among many others. A numbered Tree Trail links over 150 different tree species with descriptive leaflets for visitors.
Visitor Services & Tearoom
The garden is open daily from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm all year round. From April to September tickets are sold at the Tearoom or booked online; from October to March the entrance switches to an honesty box and QR code. The family-run Tearoom serves homemade soups and baking using home-grown vegetables and locally sourced produce where possible, and the on-site nursery propagates and sells many of the garden’s own plants.
Designation & Recognition
On 23 August 2023 Historic Environment Scotland added Glenwhan Gardens and Arboretum to the Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes as entry GDL00411, recognising it as a designed landscape of the recent past. The HES report cites ‘outstanding’ artistic interest and ‘high’ horticultural interest, and Bob Mitchell OBE, former emeritus curator at St Andrews Botanic Garden, has described it as a ‘garden of comparisons’ and one of the best modern gardens in Scotland.
