Native Plant Trust

Native Plant Trust is the nation’s oldest plant conservation organization, founded in 1900 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, originally as the Society for the Protection of Native Plants. After name changes in 1922 and 1925, the organization was long known as the New England Wild Flower Society before adopting its present name in 2019. It is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and the only organization in the United States whose mission is solely focused on conserving, studying, and promoting the native plants of the six New England states.

About the Organization

The Trust is headquartered in Wayland, Massachusetts, and operates three principal sites: Garden in the Woods, a 45-acre native plant botanic garden in Framingham; Nasami Farm, a native plant nursery in Whately in western Massachusetts; and six rare plant sanctuaries in Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont that are open to the public year-round. Thirty staff members and approximately 1,500 trained volunteers lead regional ecological work across plant conservation, horticulture, and public education.

Conservation and Horticulture Programs

In November 2025, the Trust’s rare plant seed bank passed the milestone of more than ten million seeds banked, one of the largest native seed banks in the United States, and has supplied seed used to restore storm-damaged coastal habitats along the Eastern Seaboard following Hurricane Sandy. Nasami Farm nursery propagates thousands of native plants each year from wild-collected seed, ensuring genetic diversity in material offered to gardeners and restoration projects.

Education and Published Resources

The Trust offers a complete curriculum of native plant horticulture courses, from beginner to professional certification, including the Introduction to Native Plants webinar series and pollinator garden workshops. Go Botany, the Trust’s online plant identification tool, has attracted millions of users. Major publications include Wildflowers of New England (Timber Press) covering 1,200 species, and Flora Novae Angliae (Yale University Press), the first comprehensive update of the region’s flora in 60 years.

IDEA Commitment and Awards

Native Plant Trust is committed to Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access (IDEA) and is among the first 21 organizations selected nationwide for a year-long pilot with the IDEA Center for Public Gardens. The Trust formally acknowledges that the nine properties it holds in trust are part of the homelands of Indigenous communities including the Agawan, Massachuset, N’dakina (Abenaki), Nipmuc, Pawtucket, Pocumtuc, and Wabanaki peoples. The Trust bestows three annual awards: the Founders’ Medal, the Regional Impact Award, and the Volunteer Service Award, and remains the principal authority on native plant conservation throughout New England.
