Magazine Position and Founding Background

Bonsai Focus is an international bimonthly magazine aimed at both beginners and advanced bonsai enthusiasts. Published by Bonsai Europe Publications, it is printed in six languages: English, Dutch, French, German, Italian, and Spanish, and distributed to more than 65 countries worldwide. Around 2007 the magazine ran 132 full-colour pages per issue with a circulation of about 17,500 copies. Print and e-magazine editions have run side by side since 2010, when the digital version was first introduced.

The magazine traces its lineage back to April 1989, when publisher René Rooswinkel founded Bonsai Europe in the Netherlands. Farrand Bloch joined Bonsai Europe as editor in 1998 and worked alongside Rooswinkel for nearly a decade. In 2007 the Dutch title merged with Bonsai Today, an American magazine launched by Colin Lewis in 1997, and reappeared under the Bonsai Focus name. The first combined issue was numbered BT #109 / BF #86. Rooswinkel and Bloch continued to steer the new title, which gradually became the leading western bonsai magazine.

Editorial Scope and Contributor Network

Bonsai Focus is known for balancing Eastern and Western bonsai voices. Every issue features material drawn from the Japanese magazine KINBON alongside original pieces by leading European artists. The editorial mix covers raw material selection, styling technique, repotting and soil work, pest and disease management, species profiles, artist garden tours, and on-site reporting from major European events such as the Noelanders Trophy.

Long-time cooperation with KINBON gives the English edition the same timeliness on Japanese techniques and master interviews as Japanese subscribers receive, while native-speaking editors for each language edition adapt the same material into local contexts before a unified international master is locked. This combination is the reason Bonsai Focus is widely cited as the most durable and internationally minded bonsai magazine outside Japan.

Multi-Media Format and Reader Engagement

One of Bonsai Focus’s signature features is the pairing of long-form articles with supporting videos. Styling, grafting and wiring demonstrations often ship with independent video links, accessible to subscribers through their account on both desktop and mobile. Print subscribers receive both paper and digital access, while e-magazine subscribers go digital-first.

Audience-wise the magazine serves readers who want a single thread from beginner basics to advanced technique. Newcomers get a glossary, illustrated step-by-step procedures, and extended master demonstrations; seasoned enthusiasts look forward to Noelanders Trophy coverage, Japanese yamadori expeditions, and European collector reports. Back issues from the last ten years, together with e-books, remain available through the official shop so that readers can fill in past issues.

Operating Company and Headquarters

Bonsai Focus is published by Bonsai Europe Publications, a Dutch general partnership (Vennootschap onder firma, V.O.F.). The publisher is seated in The Hague, the Netherlands. The localised editions were launched over time: the Dutch edition continued from the Bonsai Europe days, the French edition appeared in spring 2002, the German edition launched in May 2003 under Krista Leach, the Italian edition was led by Massimo Soranzio, and a Spanish edition started later before being discontinued around 2021 after about forty-six issues. Each language edition is handled by a native-speaking editor before the unified international master is released.

Publisher René Rooswinkel oversees the company’s overall business, while chief editor Farrand Bloch coordinates each issue. The editorial team relies on native-speaking editors across its language editions and maintains a long-standing exchange of material with the Japanese magazine KINBON, keeping a steady supply of technique, care, and styling content flowing into every issue.

Closure and Where to Read It Now

In November 2025 Bonsai Europe Publications announced that it was ceasing operations permanently. Issue 2025-6 (November/December 2025), numbered 196 in the English edition, became the final printed issue of Bonsai Focus. Subscribers were emailed a compensation offer that same month, and digital access rights were retired as the company wound down.

The complete Bonsai Focus archive has since moved to Bonsai Today (www.bonsaitoday.com), where it is offered as part of the platform’s membership program. Readers can browse every e-magazine from 2017 to the final issue in English, and the platform also publishes fresh monthly English-language bonsai columns and special features from Japanese studios, continuing the editorial thread that Bonsai Focus built up over more than three decades.
