Founding and Publishing Team

BONSAI ART is a German-language bonsai specialty magazine published by Dres. Strecker & Strecker GbR, a publishing and distribution limited partnership headquartered at An der Alten Ziegelei 28, Münster, Germany. The publishing house is led by Dr. Achim Strecker (publisher responsible for editorial content and publishing rights) and Dr. Eva Strecker (publisher responsible for distribution and business operations), with Heike van Gunst serving as editor-in-chief. Founded in the early 2000s and publishing continuously to issue 198 in June 2026, BONSAI ART is one of the longest-running European specialty journals dedicated to bonsai, bonsai containers, suiseki (viewing stones), and Asian art and culture. The editorial team is composed of bonsai practitioners, container makers, suiseki specialists, and scholars of Japanese culture. Office hours are Monday through Friday 10:00–12:00 and Monday through Thursday 13:00–16:00; reader inquiries are accepted via telephone 0251 533 644.

Editorial Sections and Curation

The magazine follows a systematic German horticultural journal section structure. Fixed sections include BONSAI-KUNST (Bonsai Art) subdivided into Was ist Bonsai (What is Bonsai), Bonsai-Arten (Species), Bonsai-Theorie (Theory), Bonsai-Praxis (Practice), Bonsai-Galerie (Gallery), and Bonsai-Glossar (Glossary); SCHALEN-KUNST (Container Art) comprising Schalenkunde (Container Knowledge) and Schalenmotive (Container Motifs), with the ongoing serial columns Kleine Schalenkunde and Schalenmotive; Beistellpflanzen (Companion Plants) covering kusamono and shitakusa; Interviews; and Rezensionen (Reviews) evaluating bonsai books and exhibition catalogues. The editorial philosophy combines professional systematic coverage with visual exemplars: every article is authored by a practitioner in bonsai, container art, or viewing stones, and each issue ships with dozens of full-color high-resolution plates.

Content Scope and Scholarly Value

BONSAI ART covers four core subjects: Bonsai, Bonsai-Schalen (containers), Suiseki (viewing stones), and Asian art and culture, making it one of the few German-language journals simultaneously addressing all three major disciplines of bonsai, containers, and stones. Each issue is structured around one or several featured topics. Issue 197, for example, includes the Shohin des Monats (Monthly Shohin) column on Satsuki-Azalea, a Schalenmotive entry on buffalo and ox motifs, a feature on The Bonsai Masterpiece Collection Vol. 1, and an interview with Austrian bonsai master Reinhard Schreieck. Each issue runs about 100 full-color pages. Articles are primarily in German with occasional English and Japanese contributions; technical terms retain original Japanese kanji to allow readers to trace Japanese primary sources. The readership spans professional bonsai artists, container collectors, European Bonsai Clubs members, and Asian art enthusiasts across Germany, Austria, the German-speaking Swiss region, and beyond.

Subscription and Distribution

BONSAI ART is published bimonthly with six issues per year. The annual subscription rate is €80.00 within Germany and €90.00 internationally, inclusive of shipping. Subscriptions renew automatically and can be cancelled at any time; new subscribers receive a one-time complimentary premium with their first paid issue. Readers may subscribe online via the official subscription page at https://www.bonsai-art.com/bonsai-art-fachmagazin-abo/ or purchase single issues through HÄNDLER (dealer) retail channels listed on the website. The publisher also operates an associated SHOP selling bonsai tools, containers, and books, and maintains TERMINE (events calendar) and TERMIN EINTRAGEN (event submission) sections that aggregate European bonsai exhibitions, workshops, and meetings. Subscribers can follow BONSAI ART on Instagram (@bonsai.art.magazin), Threads (@bonsai.art.magazin), and Facebook (BONSAI.ART.Magazin) for issue previews and editorial highlights.

Reader Community and International Response

Through more than two decades of continuous publication and rigorous editorial standards, BONSAI ART has cultivated a loyal reader community across the German-speaking world and Europe. The Postfach (mailbox) column publishes reader letters from international correspondents including Swiss bonsai artist Roger Huwyler (a deciduous-tree and forest-composition specialist from German-speaking Switzerland), Hamburg-based author Arian Kazem Zarrinkafsch-Bahmann, Berlin-based writer Björn Teske, and Japanese reader Theo Zimmer from Obuse, Nagano Prefecture. In his correspondence, Theo Zimmer notes that the magazine enables him to learn extensively about both the German and Japanese bonsai scenes; Roger Huwyler has requested expanded coverage of Bonsai-Wälder (bonsai forests). The BONSAI ART team responds to reader letters in each issue, sustaining a collaborative editorial culture in which subscribers help shape ongoing columns. By consistently documenting interviews, technique articles, and visual catalogues of European and Japanese bonsai masters, BONSAI ART has become an essential window for European enthusiasts into Japanese bonsai culture and German-language bonsai theory.
