Introduction
The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), based at the Ultuna campus in southern Uppsala, is a public research university specialised in life and environmental sciences. Funded directly through Sweden’s Ministry of Enterprise and Innovation (previously the Ministry for Rural Affairs), it operates 4 faculties, 30 departments and four main campuses. Its motto, “Science and Education for Sustainable Life”, reflects the university’s core mission to advance the bioeconomy, sustainable forestry, animal health and food security through research, education and environmental monitoring.
History
The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet, SLU) was founded in 1977 through the merger of three existing colleges of agriculture, forestry and veterinary medicine, together with the Veterinary School at Skara and the Forestry School at Skinnskatteberg. Its roots reach back to the 1775 Veterinary School in Skara, led by Peter Hernqvist, a student of Carl Linnaeus and the father of Swedish veterinary medicine. The Royal Swedish Academy of Agriculture and Forestry was founded in 1813, the Forest Institute in Stockholm in 1828, the Ultuna Agricultural Institute in 1848 (initiated by Robert von Kraemer and Johan Arrhenius) and the Alnarp castle began receiving its first agricultural students in 1862. Drawing inspiration from the large agricultural colleges of the United States, the university relocated the veterinary and forestry colleges from Stockholm to Ultuna.
Campuses and Faculties
SLU’s main operations are spread across four Swedish locations. The Ultuna campus in southern Uppsala serves as headquarters and hosts the university management, the University Animal Hospital (UDS, Sweden’s only university veterinary hospital), the Swedish Livestock Research Centre (one of Europe’s most modern facilities for livestock teaching and research) and the SLU Knowledge Garden. Alnarp, west of Lund and close to Malmö and Copenhagen, focuses on landscape architecture, horticulture and southern Swedish agriculture. Umeå shares its campus with Umeå University and houses most of the Faculty of Forest Sciences. Skara specialises in animal husbandry, animal welfare and precision agriculture. The university organises 30 departments into four faculties: Landscape Planning, Horticulture and Agricultural Sciences; Natural Resources and Agriculture Sciences; Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science; and Forest Sciences.
Rankings and Influence
SLU consistently ranks among the world’s leading institutions in its core subjects. In the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026 it places 3rd in Agriculture and Forestry and 23rd in Veterinary Science. The Shanghai Ranking GRAS 2025 places SLU 8th in Agricultural Sciences, 24th in Ecology and 35th in Veterinary Sciences. The university is placed 401-500 in the ARWU 2026 overall ranking and 351-400 in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026. The CWTS Leiden Ranking 2024 ranks SLU 5th among Swedish universities by P top 10% indicator. SLU was a founding member of the Euroleague for Life Sciences (ELLS) in 2001 and is certified to the ISO 14001 environmental management standard. As of 2026, the university has 4,575 students (2,570 undergraduates, 1,280 postgraduates, 528 doctoral candidates) and around 3,155 staff including 191 professors.
Public Services and Databases
SLU delivers three national public services that extend far beyond its own campus. The Swedish National Forest Inventory (NFI, Riksskogstaxeringen) produces the country’s official forest statistics, published annually as JO0801-JO0806 series through the PX-web portal and summarised in Skogsdata. SKUD is the Swedish national reference database for plant names, covering scientific, horticultural and vernacular names together with distribution, use and life-form information. Tradportalen (the Tree Portal), developed and operated for the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency by Art Data Bank since November 2008, gathers county-level tree inventories and individual submissions of newly planted and registered trees. Together with SLU’s broader open environmental monitoring data, these three services make SLU a long-standing hub of public environmental knowledge for Sweden and the wider European research community.
