Mesa Garden

Mesa Garden is a cactus and succulent seed nursery founded in the 1970s by Steven Brack and Linda Brack in Belen, New Mexico, United States. The nursery specializes in hand-packed seeds with known geographic origin data, supplying Carnegiea gigantea, Ferocactus, Lithops, Conophytum, Tephrocactus and other genera to collectors and hobbyists worldwide. In October 2016, after more than 40 years of operation, Steven and Linda transferred ownership to Aaron and Tarah Morerod, who continue to grow seed stock plants from material originally collected in the wild.

Founders and Early Years

Steven Brack grew up on a small family dairy farm in Wisconsin, where a relative’s windowsill cactus and succulents first sparked his curiosity about plants. He completed a B.S. in physics in 1970 while his interest in plants grew rapidly. He read every cactus and succulent book available at his college libraries and subscribed to European specialist journals, including the African Succulent Plant Society journal, whose contributor Doug Rowland published a travelogue about New Mexico that inspired Steven and Linda to relocate from Wisconsin.

Founding Era and New Mexico Fieldwork

In spring 1973, Steven and Linda moved to New Mexico with their young daughter, settling in Belen and spending weekends camping across the region’s deserts and mountains to build a collection of cacti and succulents with known geographic origin. The first trip to Mexico came in 1975 with Steven’s brother Bob, followed by many more trips to Mexico in subsequent years. In 1980 Steven made his first trip to South Africa with Steven Hammer, followed by multiple trips to South Africa and Namibia over the following years. The first seed list was mailed out in spring 1977, beginning the nursery’s mail-order seed business. By 1980 the catalog was turned over to a commercial printer, and by 1985 the first computer was purchased to digitize all plant records.

Ownership Transition and Greenhouse Operations

Around 2005 the nursery stopped printing a paper catalog due to envelope-stuffing workload and moved the catalog online, giving global customers immediate access instead of two-week postal delivery. Eventually 14 greenhouses were built and filled with plants. In October 2016 Aaron and Tarah Morerod signed the ownership transfer after Tarah and Aaron had previously worked at the nursery during high school and college, married in 1998, returned in 2013-2014, and worked alongside Steven for two more years absorbing his lifetime of knowledge. The new owners introduced barcode-based order verification, automated invoicing, and a photo-enabled retail shopping website while preserving the field-data-driven seed selection tradition.

Catalog Lines and Seed Business

The current online catalog is organized across three primary lines: Cacti (Echinocereus, Gymnocalycium, Ferocactus, Tephrocactus and other genera), Mesembs (Conophytum, Lithops and other Aizoaceae genera), and Succulents (other drought-adapted genera). Each seed packet is hand-packed and sealed, with field collection numbers and collector codes such as Carnegiea gigantea “Saguaro” (76.1) and Tephrocactus alexanderi var. geometricus (1250.279). Phytosanitary certificates can be added to international orders. The nursery operates both retail (online shopping cart) and wholesale channels, with Instagram, Facebook and YouTube accounts maintained for customer updates and species photographs.
