Founders Journey

Founder Tony Avent studied horticulture at NC State University, heavily influenced by the late Dr. J.C. Raulston, who championed the philosophy of “trying to grow everything no one has tried before.” In 1986, Tony and his late wife Michelle acquired a 2.2-acre abandoned tobacco field in Southern Wake County, founding the nursery with a commitment to offering diverse, rare perennial plants suited for North American climates. The nursery has conducted over 75 botanical expeditions worldwide to source rare plant resources.
