Nursery Background and Founding
Mountain Valley Growers was incorporated in 1983 in California with the goal of providing organically grown potted herbs to retail nurseries and grocery stores, beginning with just seven varieties. In 1990 the nursery brought these same plants to retail consumers through mail order, expanding to roughly three hundred varieties; in 1997 the nursery launched its own website with over two hundred pages, marking its entry into online horticultural services.
Organic Certification and Growing Standards
The nursery received California state organic certification in 1998 and later achieved USDA organic certification in 2002, ensuring every plant sold meets organic standards under the USDA framework. Each order is hand-assembled, with the nursery combining traditional and cutting-edge organic cultivation methods, upholding the promise that quality benefits families, the earth and consumers alike.
Product Range and Variety System
The nursery specialises in three main groups: organic herbs, organic perennials and organic vegetables, covering several hundred varieties including artemisia, basil, lavender, mint, oregano, rosemary, sage, thyme, yarrow, scented geranium, rockrose, butterfly bush, rose, plus vegetables and fruits such as asparagus, artichoke, celery, tomato, pepper, onion and strawberry. The nursery also offers over a dozen themed garden collections such as culinary herb assortments, butterfly attractor gardens, English cottage garden kits and specialty herb combinations.
Plant Specifications and Sales Format
Plants are sold in standardised 2.75-inch square pots, packed in boxes 8 inches tall, with the total height of pot and plant never exceeding this limit; 128-cell plug trays are available for bulk purchases. The nursery does not sell seeds, dried or cut herbs, or wholesale orders, and is not open to public visits, operating continuously as a propagation facility with all orders shipped via mail order throughout the United States.
Industry Recognition and Continued Expansion
The nursery became the first in the United States to offer certified organic strawberry plants by mail in 2006, expanded its lavender fields in 2017 to meet the demand for organic plug trays, and in 2018 celebrated its thirty-fifth year of operation and the twentieth Fall Extravaganza.
