A National Tree Charity Born from a Planting Campaign

The Tree Council grew out of Plant a Tree in 73, the successful 1973 campaign to replant the British countryside after the devastation caused by Dutch elm disease. Its legacy included the creation of National Tree Week, now held at the start of the winter planting season. Guided by “Working Together for the Love of Trees,” the charity connects government, local authorities, charities, communities, schools, researchers and individuals to strengthen the trees, hedgerows and connected treescapes of the United Kingdom.

Tree Wardens and Community Planting

Volunteer Tree Wardens form the heart of its local network. More than 6,000 volunteers plant, care for and champion trees, organise activities, raise funds, conduct research and advise their communities. The organisation reports that their work has helped plant more than eight million trees, while protecting and caring for many more. The long-running Branching Out Fund supports practical community planting, and seasonal campaigns such as National Tree Week and Seed Gathering Season make planting, seed collection and tree growing accessible to the public.

Schools and Young Tree Champions

Young Tree Champions brings tree education and action into schools through free trees and hedgerow whips, teaching materials, online training, technology and project support. Since 2020, the programme has worked with more than 400 school and youth groups, planted nearly 12,000 trees and hedgerow whips at close to 300 schools, and engaged almost 120,000 pupils. Orchards for Schools complements this work with orchard or fruiting-hedge packs, curriculum-linked resources and a care pledge that follows trees from planning and planting into establishment.

Tree Health, Hedgerows and Applied Research

The Science and Research team works with Defra, Forest Research, Fera Science, local authorities and other partners on tree health and resilience. Its portfolio includes ash dieback, oak processionary moth, mistletoe, hedgerow establishment and citizen science. A tree-establishment monitoring project moved beyond simple survival counts to test health indicators, a monitoring protocol and a data-collection app across more than 30 organisations, 40 sites and 1,200 trees. Connected Treescapes also combines ecology, psychology, history and economics to support better woodland policy and management.

Partnerships and Lasting Treescape Impact

The Tree Council is both a charity and a membership organisation whose network includes charities, community groups and local authorities. It links volunteer action, research partnerships, grants and public campaigns to improve the quality as well as the quantity of trees. Close the Gap advances healthier, better-connected hedgerows through planting, knowledge exchange, tree supply and public engagement, and helped launch the first National Hedgerow Week in 2021. The broader goal is a thriving, diverse and resilient UK treescape in which new trees establish successfully and existing trees receive long-term protection and care.
