History and Identity

The Deutsche Dendrologische Gesellschaft, or DDG, was founded in Karlsruhe, Germany, in 1892. It is a registered society for people and institutions concerned with the knowledge, protection, planting, care, study, and use of trees and shrubs. An official DDG retrospective identifies Ulrich von St. Paul, Ludwig Beißner, and Hermann Zabel as important forces behind the foundation; Zabel is also described as a founding member. The society’s membership is about 1,300 people from horticulture, forestry, nurseries, botanic gardens, landscape design, botany, and conservation.

Work and Exchange

The DDG connects dendrology with practical work in gardens, parks, urban green space, forestry, and nature conservation. Its programme includes lectures, courses, seminars, excursions in Germany and abroad, and an annual meeting. Regional groups support local activities, while the Young Dendrologists group gives students and early-career participants a place to learn plant identification and discuss current questions about woody plants.

Publications and Library

The society publishes the annual Mitteilungen der Deutschen Dendrologischen Gesellschaft, or MDDG. Articles cover woody-plant morphology, physiology, systematics and nomenclature, ecology, distribution, propagation, and use, as well as collections and plants from other floristic regions. The quarterly Ginkgoblätter carries notices about meetings and training, descriptions of trees and shrubs, and travel reports. The DDG also maintains a specialist collection held in the forestry and forest-ecology library at the University of Göttingen.

Camillo Schneider Prize

Each year the DDG awards the Camillo Schneider Prize for promising scientific work in dendrology. It is intended especially for students and doctoral researchers working on focused woody-plant topics. The 2026 award concerned the dispersal of Service Tree (Cormus domestica) seeds, while the 2025 award recognized research on the growth and climate sensitivity of Northern Red Oak (Quercus rubra) provenances in Central Europe.

Champion Trees and Public Work

Together with the Gesellschaft Deutsches Arboretum, the DDG launched the Champion Trees and record-tree project in 2008, with systematic work beginning in 2009. Its first web presentation in 2010 listed 900 individual tree records. The project page reports about 11,500 woody plants in the record-tree list in December 2024. The DDG also supports the National Heritage Trees initiative and helped establish the European Champion Tree Forum, created at a 2010 meeting in Wespelaar, Belgium.
