Groei & Bloei

协会还组织 Floraliawedstrijd(弗洛拉利亚赛),由小学生从一根插条开始培育室内盆花,最后评出优胜者。

The Dutch and Flemish Garden-Lovers’ Association

Groei & Bloei (literally “Growth and Bloom”) is the garden-lovers’ association of the Netherlands and Flanders, Belgium, presenting itself as “dé tuinvereniging van Nederland en Vlaanderen.” It groups people who own a garden, a balcony or just a few pots under one community. The association’s slogan is “Samen voor de groenste tuinen” (Together for the greenest gardens), linking ordinary hobby gardeners, kitchen-garden growers and local branch members. The national office (landelijk bureau) sits in Zoetermeer, the Netherlands, staffed by roughly twenty full-time employees who coordinate the 125 local branches. Since 1970 the Dutch name has been KMTP/Groei & Bloei, while the statutes still preserve the 1872 name Koninklijke Maatschappij voor Tuinbouw en Plantkunde.

From the 1872 KMTP to Today’s Groei & Bloei

The predecessor was the Maatschappij voor Tuinbouw en Plantkunde, founded on 17 December 1872 in The Hague by the Amsterdam physician and pharmacist D.J. Coster. Its first Algemene Vergadering (general assembly) was held in The Hague on 27 September 1873 with 123 members divided over the Amsterdam and Arnhem branches. The society originally served professional growers, nurserymen and flower traders; from the late 19th century it began advising the government on horticultural policy, organising export exhibitions, and founding lower horticultural schools. In 1923 the society received the “Koninklijk” royal predicate and became the Koninklijke Maatschappij voor Tuinbouw en Plantkunde (KMTP). The Dutch Royal House press release marking the 150th anniversary in 2022 still used the KMTP name. In 1925 KMTP introduced the American Mother’s Day (Moederdag) to the Netherlands.

125 Local Branches and the Annual Open Gardens Weekend

The association now counts 125 branches spread across the Dutch provinces and the adjacent Dutch-speaking part of Belgium, making it one of the largest garden-lovers’ organisations in Western Europe. Each branch runs its own programme and members choose freely which to attend. The most prominent annual event is the Opentuinenweekend (Open Gardens Weekend) on the third weekend of June, when more than 1,000 garden owners open their private gardens to the public free of charge. The Floraliawedstrijd is a schoolchildren’s competition in which pupils grow a houseplant from a single cutting and compete for the best result. Regular activities include lectures, workshops, busreis garden excursions, and courses in flower arranging, vegetable growing and pruning.

Ten Issues a Year of Groei & Bloei Magazine and a Royal Patron

The association’s monthly magazine Groei & Bloei has used its current name since 1960 and publishes ten issues per year, delivered by post to subscribers and members. It is the highest-circulation gardening magazine in the Netherlands, covering garden design, kitchen gardens, pruning, composting, biodiversity and local-branch event listings. Magazine subscription is bundled with association membership: subscribers are members and receive discounts on branch courses, workshops and garden excursions. Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands has been the beschermvrouwe (patron) of the association since 1980. She appears at association events during the May Koningsdag (King’s Day) and attended the 150th-anniversary celebration in 2022, continuing a tradition with the Dutch royal family that dates back to 1923.

Tienpuntenplan Climate-Friendly Gardening Initiative

The association publishes the Tienpuntenplan (Ten-Point Plan), a set of practical climate-friendly gardening recommendations covering composting, native plants, rainwater harvesting, reduced fertiliser use, avoiding chemical pesticides, leaving dead wood and leaf litter, and providing habitat for birds and insects. The Ten-Point Plan works alongside the Groene activiteiten (Green Activities) section, which aggregates lectures, open days and volunteer days from all branches into one annual action network. The members’ Tuinhulp (Garden Help) board lets members post requests and offers inside their local branch, lending tools, swapping seedlings, and helping elderly members with seasonal heavy pruning.
