协会沿革
英国鸢尾协会（The British Iris Society，简称 BIS）成立于 1922 年，是一家在英格兰与威尔士注册的老牌园艺慈善机构，慈善登记号为 261896，专注于鸢尾属及其所在的鸢尾科植物在英国本地的栽培、保育与推广。协会总部设在英国，会员遍及全球。
宗旨与活动
协会沿用创立之初确立的五项宗旨：推广、改善并扩展鸢尾与其它鸢尾科植物的栽培；鼓励对鸢尾科知识的探索；面向公众组织展览、展出与集会；与植物园、园艺学会、鸢尾登录机构等国内外同行开展协作；与各国鸢尾学会交流信息与资源。2022 年，协会凭借长期推动鸢尾栽培的贡献获得英国皇家园艺学会切尔西花展金奖。
期刊与种子交换
协会每年出版会刊与年度评论，记录鸢尾新品种登录、英国本土鸢尾栽培心得以及协会活动回顾。面向会员与非会员开放的种子交换计划每年定期发布名录，会员亦可在协会苗圃与展览中获取鸢尾种苗。协会多个会员持有英国植物遗产国家植物收藏（Plant Heritage National Collection）。
会员与组织关系
园艺专业的学生可免费加入协会，会员可获得会刊、种子名录、活动通知及专属资料库访问权限。协会下设无髯鸢尾组（1976 年成立）与历史鸢尾组等子团体，并在英国南部、中部与西部设有地区分会，国际上与美国、加拿大、澳大利亚、新西兰、意大利、日本等地的鸢尾学会保持长期协作。
教育与推广
协会每年秋季举办周末大会与年度会员大会，定期组织线上讲座、栽培教学和鸢尾园参观活动，并维护面向公众的鸢尾栽培指南与病虫害资料库。会员可在协会名录中查询经审核的鸢尾供苗商与品种登记信息。
About the Society
The British Iris Society (BIS) is a UK-based horticultural charity registered with the Charity Commission (No. 261896). Founded in 1922, it promotes the cultivation, study, and conservation of irises and other Iridaceae throughout Great Britain and works closely with sister iris societies worldwide.
Aims and Activities
The Society’s founding aims remain its core mission: to promote, improve, and extend the cultivation of irises and related Iridaceae; to encourage research into the family; to organise public exhibitions and meetings; to collaborate with botanic gardens, horticultural societies, and iris registration authorities at home and abroad; and to share information with iris societies in other countries. In 2022 the Society received a Gold Medal at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
Journal and Seed Exchange
The Society publishes an annual journal and review featuring cultivar registrations, cultivation notes from British growers, and reports on society events. Its seed exchange scheme opens each year to both members and non-members, while members can also access plant material through society shows and partner nurseries. Several members hold Plant Heritage National Collections.
Membership and Affiliated Groups
Horticultural students may join free of charge. Members receive the journal, seed lists, event notices, and access to the society’s library catalogue. The Society runs specialist subgroups including the Group for Beardless Irises (founded 1976) and the Historic Iris Group, alongside regional branches in southern, midlands, and western England. It maintains close ties with the American, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand, Italian, and Japanese iris societies.
Education and Outreach
An autumn weekend and AGM anchor the society’s yearly programme, complemented by webinars, garden visits, and an iris guide for growers. Public-facing resources cover iris cultivation, pests and diseases, and registering new cultivars, making the Society a long-standing reference point for British iris growers.
