Organizational Origins and History
The Daffodil Society was founded in 1898 as The Midland Daffodil Society in Birmingham, England. It is the oldest organization dedicated to the breeding and cultivation of daffodils in Britain and one of the earliest such societies in the world. The society was formally registered as a charity with the Charity Commission for England and Wales in 1998 (Reg. No. 1055817), establishing its status as a non-profit organization. For over a century, the society has played a pivotal role in advancing the knowledge, cultivation, and exhibition of the genus Narcissus in Britain and beyond.
Mission and Objectives
The Daffodil Society aims to advance the education of the public in awareness of the whole of the genus Narcissus. Through its publications and activities, the society helps those with an interest in the flower gain greater pleasure from their association with it. While both the botanical name “Narcissus” and the common name “Daffodil” refer to the same plant, the society officially adopts the more widely recognized term “Daffodil” in its communications and branding.
Platform Ecosystem
The Daffodil Society is open to everyone, welcoming members from across the gardening community, including keen gardeners, horticultural societies, professional growers, botanists, and enthusiastic flower show exhibitors. The society maintains a network of regional groups such as the Northern Group, which publishes regular newsletters with show information and member updates. The society maintains an active social media presence through its Facebook page “For The Love of Daffodils” and its Instagram account “UK Daffodil Society,” fostering online engagement among members and enthusiasts worldwide.
Publications and Scholarly Exchange
The society issues two annual publications free of charge to all members and affiliated societies. The Journal, published in spring, provides advice on cultivation, hybridisation, and other specialist topics, alongside a show calendar. The Newsletter, published in autumn, reports on daffodil show results and offers commentary on the growing season. Together, these publications form the backbone of the society’s scholarly exchange and member communication.
Display Gardens and Awards
The society holds its Annual Show in the Midlands, traditionally at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. The 2026 show is scheduled for Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th April at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, Westbourne Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham B15 3TR. Exhibitors must be members of the society, but admission is free and there are no entry fees for competitors. The society also presents the George Tarry Award to recognize outstanding achievements in daffodil cultivation and exhibition by members and exhibitors.
Membership and Local Societies
The society operates on a membership basis, with exhibitors required to be members, while general admission to shows is free and no entry fees are charged for competition classes. Affiliated local societies receive the society’s official publications and enjoy the benefits of association with Britain’s premier daffodil organization. The society also runs an annual bulb lottery, offering members the opportunity to win quality daffodil bulbs as prizes, thereby promoting the distribution and cultivation of superior cultivars.
