Geraniums
Origin & family heritage
Kuhlmann’s Greenhouse Garden Market has been a family-owned and operated greenhouse on the west side of Edmonton, Alberta since 1962. For more than six decades the Kuhlmann family has run the property as a working farm, retail garden centre and flower shop, growing the bulk of its own plants, shrubs and vegetables on site. The address on 1320-167 Avenue NW has become a familiar landmark for Edmonton-area gardeners who return year after year for seedlings, geraniums, hanging baskets and seasonal produce.
Spring Open House tradition
Each year on the last weekend of April, Kuhlmann’s hosts its Spring Open House Celebration from 9 am to 5 pm. The two-day kickoff event offers complimentary coffee and donuts, draws and prizes, and face painting for kids, and is treated by many Edmonton families as the unofficial start of the gardening season. The greenhouse is fully stocked with annuals, perennials, tomato and vegetable starts, trees, shrubs and roses, and the knowledgeable staff stays on hand to answer planting questions throughout the day.
Homegrown annuals, perennials & vegetables
Homegrown plants are the backbone of the greenhouse. The annuals list includes alyssum, impatiens, salvia, coleus, gazania, sweet peas, evening scented stocks, asters, begonias, petunias, pansies, marigolds, snapdragons and the signature Kuhlmann’s Famous Geraniums. The perennial yard carries ground covers, shade lovers, climbing vines, ornamental grasses and the Rock Stars™ and Jeepers Creepers™ series. Vegetable and herb starts cover 30+ crops, including the Mighty ‘Mato grafted tomato line (Mortgage Lifter, Stupice, Sun Sugar, Black Krim, etc.) selected for Prairie temperature swings.
Bulbs & famous Kuhlmann’s Geraniums
Kuhlmann’s sells bulbs in two seasons. Spring-planted bulbs go in after the last frost and bloom in summer; they include tuberous begonias, canna lily, calla lily, dahlias, gladiolas, alternathera and oxalis, and must be lifted and stored indoors over winter. Fall-planted bulbs (tulips, muscari, crocuses, fritillaria and lilies) are set in September and October before the ground freezes and bloom the following spring. The Famous Geraniums, meanwhile, remain the most anticipated release each year for long-time Edmonton customers.
Garden market & flower shop
Adjacent to the greenhouse, the Kuhlmann’s Garden Market stocks seasonal produce grown on the property: beans, beets, broccoli, brussels sprouts, carrots, corn, cabbage, cucumbers, celeriac, cauliflower, dill weed, garlic, kale, leeks, lettuce, onions, parsnips, peas, potatoes, pumpkins, radishes, rutabaga, swiss chard, spinach, squash, tomatoes and zucchini. The Kuhlmann’s Flower Shop, a separate retail storefront, handles fresh-cut flowers, baskets, sympathy and occasion arrangements as well as phone and in-store orders. Visitors can move between seedlings, hanging baskets, fresh produce and bouquets in a single stop.
