Lincolnshire family-run specialist nursery established in 1971

Pottertons Nursery is a family-run specialist nursery near Nettleton, Caistor, Lincolnshire, founded by Robert Potterton in 1971. From the mid-1990s the nursery traded as Potterton & Martin and supplied alpines, dwarf bulbs, snowdrops and woodland plants by mail order worldwide. The nursery has accumulated seven RHS Chelsea Flower Show Gold Medals and continues to maintain that record into 2026. It is now run jointly by Rob, Jackie and Hannah Potterton as both a UK-wide mail-order supplier and a small on-site teaching venue for hobbyists and garden clubs.

Mail-order system: annual printed catalogues plus online ordering across England, Scotland and Wales

The nursery publishes two printed catalogues each year. The 2026 Alpine & Plants Catalogue lists 138 genera; the 2026 Dwarf Bulb Catalogue lists 47 genera. Mail-order is accepted to England, Scotland and Wales, with dispatch running from mid-January to November (alpines and plants) and from September to the end of October (dwarf bulbs). Orders are reserved and dispatched in the order received, typically within fifteen days, subject to weather. Postage rates are listed in the published Terms of Business. Customers can also place orders in person at the plant fairs and shows the nursery attends across the UK, which saves the postage cost.

On-site opening hours and annual open days: Monday to Friday 10am-3pm, March to October

The nursery sales area opens to visitors from March to October, Monday to Friday 10am to 3pm; from November to February visits are by appointment only. The nursery sits on Moortown Road in Nettleton, Lincolnshire LN7 6HX, one mile from the village of Nettleton off the A46, with a signboard on the left-hand side of the B1205; the market town of Caistor, two miles away, offers refreshments and accommodation. Display areas include raised beds, troughs, a crevice garden and a woodland garden, showing the plants offered for sale growing in real conditions. Two special open days are held each year, in spring and autumn, paired with a Macmillan cancer-support coffee morning; in 2026 the May open day raised £800 for Macmillan.

2026 show schedule and garden-club talks across multiple English counties

In 2026 the nursery attends around thirteen plant fairs and shows across England, including Plant Hunters Fair at Dorothy Clive Garden in Shropshire (30-31 August), The Generous Gardener Plant Fair in Wiltshire (4 September), Forde Abbey Plant Fair in Somerset (5 September), Plant Hunters Fair at Bodenham Arboretum in Worcestershire (5 September), Rare Plant Fair at Adwell House in Oxfordshire (6 September), Rare Plant Fair at Salthrop House in Wiltshire (11 September), Plant Hunters Fair at Weston Park in Shropshire (13 September), Plant Hunters Fair at Arley Hall in Cheshire (20 September), the AGS Loughborough Autumn Show (26 September), the AGS Hexham Autumn Show (3 October), the Great Dixter Plant Sale in East Sussex (3-4 October) and the RHS Garden Harlow Carr Show in North Yorkshire (10 October). Pre-booked orders can be delivered free of charge to any of these events. Rob Potterton also gives five talks for garden clubs and societies in the UK and overseas, covering the 1994 seed-collecting expedition to south-west China, a 2019 visit to New Zealand, the nursery’s forty-year history, a beginner’s guide to alpines and bulbs, and a light-hearted quiz format.

Family-run heritage and public contact channels

Run as a family business for more than fifty years, the nursery has evolved from a worldwide mail-order operation under the Potterton & Martin name into a small specialist nursery combining retail, mail order, show attendance and club talks. All current catalogues, plant lists and show updates are available through the nursery website; mail-order and sales enquiries are handled by email and telephone. The nursery maintains a dog-friendly visiting policy and offers free expert planting advice in the sales area.
