Friends of the Rogerson Clematis Collection

Founding and Family Legacy of the Clematis Collection
The Rogerson Clematis Garden was founded by American horticulturist Brewster Rogerson in 1971 in Oregon, originally as a private collection. Over the decades it expanded into a comprehensive North American public garden collection, cultivating exceptional diversity alongside historic heirloom varieties, rare wild-collected species, and the latest hybrid introductions, serving as an enduring reference for clematis enthusiasts, professional breeders, and academic researchers across the continent.
Public Garden Accreditation and Institutional Partnerships
In 2018, the Rogerson Clematis Collection received full accreditation in the Plant Collections Network (PCN), an initiative of the American Public Gardens Association in cooperation with the United States Department of Agriculture, becoming the only clematis collection in North America to hold this full accreditation. The collection is stewarded by the Friends of the Rogerson Clematis Collection, who coordinate with the International Clematis Society and host lectures, workshops, and community engagement programs throughout the year.
Garden Layout and Year-Round Viewing Highlights
The collection is located at Luscher Farm in West Linn, Oregon, occupying a series of themed beds and display gardens featuring 2450 individual plants representing 961 distinct species or cultivated varieties. From large-flowered forms to delicate bell-shaped blossoms and feathery seed heads, visitors can explore diverse ornamental expressions in every season, with reference maps that guide enthusiasts to specific cultivars by bed number, offering free admission and open access.
Educational Outreach and Volunteer Collaboration
The garden maintains active community education through cultivation guides, focused lectures, webinar recordings, and hands-on workshops, covering container cultivation, sun and shade requirements, seasonal bloom identification, and cultivar selection. Curator Linda Beutler hosts regular online presentations, while the Friends of the Rogerson Clematis Collection welcome group tour bookings, private class requests, and volunteer participation through the official site, sustaining the collection as a shared civic resource.
Membership and Donor Support
Long-term operation of the collection is sustained through the Friends of the Rogerson Clematis Collection membership program and public donations, including inscribed tuteur plaques that celebrate donors and the garden’s seasonal cycles. Members and partner organizations receive horticultural updates, activity priority, and cultivation guides, while local partnerships such as the Fred Meyer community rewards program reinforce this urban botanic specialty garden with academic and conservation value.
