机构概况

陕西省西安植物园(陕西省植物研究所)始建于1959年,是国家从战略发展需求的高度出发,由中国科学院在我国西北地区建设的第一个植物园,也是解放后全国重点建设的八大植物园之一。1978年国家机构精简后,西安植物园变更为陕西省属事业单位,隶属陕西省科学院,正式更名为”陕西省西安植物园”。经过六十余年的发展,西安植物园已成为陕西省内最重要的植物资源迁地保护与科研科普基地之一。

西安植物园现为陕西省省级科研院所,主要从事植物资源迁地保育、植物科学研究、科普教育工作。园区是”陕西省植物资源保护与利用工程技术研究中心”和”陕西省秦巴山区生物资源保护与利用工程技术研究中心”的依托单位,也是陕西省植物资源保护学科”三秦学者”设岗单位,在西北地区植物学研究领域具有重要的学术地位。

历史沿革

1959年,西安植物园作为中国科学院在西北地区布局的第一个植物保护与研究基地正式建立,填补了西北地区植物园建设的空白。建园初期,园区位于西安市大雁塔旁,占地面积20公顷,主要承担西北地区植物资源调查、引种驯化和保护研究等任务。1978年,根据国家科研机构管理体制改革部署,西安植物园由中央下放至陕西省管理,转为省属事业单位,隶属陕西省科学院,进入了新的发展阶段。

2011年,西安植物园迎来重要发展机遇。为支持西安市城市建设和长远发展,园区在原址保留12公顷的同时,在曲江新区征地43公顷建设新园区。新区建设被列入陕西省和西安市重点项目,标志着西安植物园进入”一园两区”发展新阶段。新园区规划科学、功能完善,进一步提升了园区的科研能力和科普服务水平。

园区规模

西安植物园老区位于西安市大雁塔旁,占地20公顷;新园区位于西安市曲江新区,占地43公顷,总面积较原址扩大一倍以上。园区收集保存植物3400余种,保存国家重点保护的珍稀濒危植物70余种,涵盖秦巴山区特有的珍稀药用植物、经济植物和观赏植物等。园区设有专类园区,包括木兰园、牡丹园、芍药园、蜡梅园、玉兰园等,集中展示国内外重要植物类群。

园区拥有完善的科研配套设施,包括国家重点实验室依托平台、学术委员会、科研团队和实验平台等。现有科研人员百余人,组成多支在国内外具有影响力的研究团队,在植物分类学、植物生态学、濒危物种保护等领域取得了一系列重要科研成果。

科学研究

西安植物园科研实力雄厚,近年来在多个领域取得重要突破。2026年,园区科研团队成功破解地黄花色变异之谜,揭示了调控花色形成的关键分子机制,研究成果发表后引起学术界广泛关注。在濒危物种保护方面,园区在秦贝母扩繁项目上取得重大进展,将濒危物种秦贝母从最初2株成功扩繁至350株以上,首次实现规模化人工培育,为该物种的迁地保护和野外回归奠定了基础。

园区还承担着大量国家级和省级科研项目,包括中国科学院知识创新工程重大项目、国家自然科学基金项目以及陕西省重点研发计划等。学术交流方面,园区定期举办各类学术研讨会,包括中国林学会树木引种驯化专业委员会学术研讨会、中国玉兰研讨会暨木兰产业国家创新联盟年会等,吸引国内外知名学者参与交流合作。

Overview

Shaanxi Provincial Xi’an Botanical Garden (Shaanxi Institute of Botanical Research) was established in 1959 as the first botanical garden built by the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Northwest China, and remains one of the eight key botanical gardens constructed in China after the founding of the People’s Republic. Following national institutional reforms in 1978, the garden transitioned to become a provincial-level public institution under the Shaanxi Academy of Sciences, marking a new phase in its development as a center for plant conservation, scientific research, and public education in the region.

As a provincial-level research institute, the garden focuses on ex-situ plant conservation, botanical scientific research, and science education. It serves as the research base for the “Shaanxi Provincial Engineering Research Center for Plant Resource Conservation and Utilization” and the “Shaanxi Provincial Engineering Research Center for Qinba Mountain Biological Resource Conservation and Utilization.” The garden also hosts the “Sanqin Scholar” program in plant resource conservation, holding significant academic influence across Northwest China.

History

In 1959, Xi’an Botanical Garden was established as the first plant conservation and research base in Northwest China under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, filling a critical gap in the region’s botanical garden network. During its early years, the garden was located beside the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda in Xi’an, covering 20 hectares, primarily undertaking plant resource surveys, introduction and domestication, and conservation research. The 1978 institutional reform brought significant changes as the garden transitioned from central to provincial administration, becoming a provincial public institution under the Shaanxi Academy of Sciences.

A major expansion occurred in 2011 when the garden retained 12 hectares of its original site while acquiring 43 hectares in the Qujiang New District to establish a new campus. This new development, designated as a key project by both Shaanxi Province and Xi’an City, enabled the garden to enter a new “one garden, two districts” development phase with significantly enhanced research capacity and visitor services.

Garden Scale

Xi’an Botanical Garden now spans two locations: the original 20-hectare site near the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda and a new 43-hectare campus in Qujiang New District. The garden houses a collection of over 3,400 plant species, including more than 70 nationally protected rare and endangered species native to the Qinba Mountains region, encompassing rare medicinal plants, economic plants, and ornamental species. Specialized gardens include Magnolia, Peony, Tree Peony, Wintersweet, and Yulan gardens, showcasing major plant groups from China and around the world.

Xi’an Botanical Garden has achieved major breakthroughs in recent years. In 2026, garden researchers unraveled the mystery of flower color variation in Rehmannia (Di Huang), identifying key molecular mechanisms regulating anthocyanin biosynthesis. In endangered species conservation, the garden achieved remarkable success in propagating the endangered Fritillaria qinensis (Qin Bei Mu), successfully expanding the population from just 2 specimens to over 350 individuals through innovative propagation techniques, marking the first successful large-scale artificial cultivation of this species.

The garden undertakes numerous national and provincial research projects, including major programs from the Chinese Academy of Sciences Innovation Knowledge Program, National Natural Science Foundation projects, and Shaanxi Province key R&D initiatives. The new campus of Xi’an Botanical Garden is located in Qujiang New District, Xi’an, bordered by South Third Ring Road to the north, Changming Road to the east, the Ring Expressway to the south, and Park South Road (planned) to the west. The original campus is located at 17 Cuihua South Road, Yanta District, Xi’an. The garden is accessible via Xi’an’s public transit system including metro and bus routes.

The garden is open daily from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Online ticket booking is available through the official website. Group visit reservations are also offered, suitable for school field trips and corporate team-building activities.
