About the Society
The New Zealand Plant Protection Society (NZPPS) was established in 1952 as a national scientific organisation that pools and exchanges the latest developments on weeds, pests and pathogens of plants in New Zealand. Membership is open to groups and individuals with an interest in biology, ecology and control of weeds, vertebrate and invertebrate pests, and pathogens and beneficial micro-organisms in agriculture, horticulture, forestry and natural ecosystems. The Society is based in New Zealand and welcomes members from across the research, government and commercial sectors.
Membership categories
Four routes exist for joining the Society. Ordinary membership is available to any person whose application is approved by the Executive; associate membership is available to students and retired members; sustaining membership is open to corporate organisations whose objectives align with those of the Society; and life membership is conferred at an Annual or Special General Meeting on the recommendation of the Executive, recognising outstanding service to the Society. Prospective members are expected to have read and accepted the rules of the Society before applying.
Journal and book publishing
The Society publishes the scientific journal “New Zealand Plant Protection”, which carries peer-reviewed articles on weeds, invertebrate and vertebrate pests, pathogens and beneficial organisms across pastures, arable and horticultural crops, forestry and natural ecosystems. Each volume is assigned a DOI series under the prefix 10.30843/nzpp, with the most recent available volume being Volume 71. The Society also maintains a book catalogue covering biosecurity, biocontrol, pest management and weed science, organised by topic on the publications page.
Annual conference and awards
The Society holds an annual NZPPS conference where members present the latest research, supported by published instructions for presenters, poster authors and session chairs. It administers a portfolio of awards and scholarships that recognise sustained contribution and encourage early-career research, including the New Zealand Plant Protection Medal, life membership, the NZPPS Research Scholarship, the Dan Watkins Scholarship in Weed Science, the NZPPS/Zespri Kiwifruit Scholarship, a conference travel grant for students and a travel award for members.
Pesticide resistance and industry resources
The Society hosts the Pesticide Resistance information centre, covering herbicides, insecticides and miticides, fungicides and crop-specific resistance management, and maintains the New Zealand Committee on Pesticide Resistance (NZCPR) database. It also links members to the AgPest database, the Council of Australasian Weed Societies (CAWS) and Better Border Biosecurity (B3), and publishes useful websites, jobs and industry news through the Society website. Detailed information is available on the relevant pages linked from the Society homepage.
