Perennial Plant of the Year® 年度评选

Perennial Plant of the Year®(年度多年生植物),评选标准要求候选植物能适应多种气候条件、低维护、相对抗病虫害、当年即可供应并具备多季节观赏价值。

Legal Status and Membership

The Perennial Plant Association (PPA) is a non-profit trade association incorporated on August 29, 1984, in the State of Ohio, dedicated to the herbaceous perennial industry. Its membership comprises growers, retailers, landscape designers and contractors, educators, and others professionally involved in the perennial trade, with operational headquarters in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Origins and Founding History

The Association traces its origins to a 1983 long-range planning symposium convened by Dr. Steven Still, Professor of Landscape Horticulture at The Ohio State University, which is widely credited as the first North American conference devoted specifically to herbaceous perennials. That gathering directly led to PPA’s formal incorporation the following year and shaped the Association’s bylaws, regional structure, and ongoing mission.

Regional Structure and the Seven Geographic Divisions

PPA is governed by a Board of Directors composed of four officers and seven regional directors, with each director representing one of seven geographic regions: Central, Western, Great Lakes, Mid-Atlantic, Northeast, Southern (covering the United States), and Canada. This regional structure, formally codified in the Association’s Bylaws, ensures representation across the major North American perennial-producing and -consuming markets.

The Perennial Plant of the Year® Program

Since 1990, PPA members have annually elected a Perennial Plant of the Year® from nominations submitted by members and trial gardens, with selection criteria emphasizing adaptability across multiple climates, low maintenance, relative pest and disease resistance, ready market availability, and multi-season ornamental interest. The 2026 selection is Andropogon gerardii ‘Blackhawks’ PP27949; recent honorees include Phlox paniculata ‘Jeana’ (2024) and Rudbeckia ‘American Gold Rush’ PP28498 (2023).

Awards, Symposia, and Educational Outreach

Beyond the annual plant selection, the Association administers a suite of Special Recognition Awards honoring industry leadership, professional service, and education, and has since 1992 operated the Landscape Design Awards program recognizing exemplary projects that feature herbaceous perennials. Educational programming includes the annual National Symposium held in different U.S. and Canadian cities each summer, the PPA: Virtual Edition webinar series, and the June Perennial Garden Month consumer outreach campaign.
