Friend of the Society
To inspire garden and landscape design that enriches homes, places and lives,
History and Renaming
Founded in 1981 in the United Kingdom as the Society of Garden Designers, the organisation was set up by a group of landscape designers who wanted to formalise garden design as a recognised profession. It was incorporated as a company limited by guarantee at Companies House on 10 November 2004 under registration number 05283373. Several years later, as the society broadened its remit to cover landscape as well as garden work, the trading name was updated to the Society of Garden + Landscape Designers (SGLD). Membership now spans small urban courtyards, roof terraces, family gardens, country estates and public parks.
Membership Categories and Accreditation Pathway
There are six membership categories. Friend of the Society is open to anyone with an interest in garden and landscape design; Student membership is for those currently studying on a programme of at least 200 guided learning hours; Pre-registered membership is for practising designers working towards full accreditation; the Pre-registered Graduate Route gives recent level-3 graduates a discounted two-year pre-registered term; Registered Membership is awarded only after passing the Pathway assessment, after which the designer may use the post-nominal MSGLD; Fellowship (FSGLD) is reserved for Registered Members who have made a sustained contribution to the profession. The Pathway typically takes three to five years and requires the submission of three projects of varied character, size and scope for review by a three-strong panel of trained assessors.
Mission and Four Core Values
The society states its mission on the About Us page as To inspire garden and landscape design that enriches homes, places and lives. This mission is held up by four stated values. Excellence stands for the highest standards in sustainable garden and landscape design and for being the expert voice in the field. Community is about nurturing members and creating open opportunities to learn and build a career. Creativity recognises that innovation comes from a diverse and inclusive community. Transparency is about open and democratic decision-making and preserving the independence that builds trust.
Annual Awards, Journal and Continuing Professional Development
The SGLD Awards are held every year and cover small gardens, commercial landscaping projects and larger country estates. Categories include the Grand Award, the People’s Choice Award and a separate student route. The 2026 Grand Award went to Charlotte Rowe Garden Design; entries for the 2027 Awards are now open. Members also receive the Garden Design Journal, published six times a year, which carries project case studies, industry news and reviews. Alongside the awards, the society runs a year-round calendar of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) workshops, regional cluster meetings and study days led by Registered Members and Fellows.
Find a Designer, Affiliated Suppliers and Contact
The website offers a free Find a Designer directory for householders, with filters for project type, region, registered status and budget. A separate Find an Affiliated Supplier page lists nurseries, landscapers and other trade partners that work closely with the society. The administrative office is in the Herefordshire town of Ross-on-Wye, and is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm. Media enquiries are handled by the PR consultancy Hind + Osen.
