Founding and Mission

Vancouver Hardy Plant Group was founded in 1997 by an enthusiast who wanted to attend talks by Canadian and international speakers and to share knowledge of hardy, herbaceous perennials, trees, shrubs, and their use in landscape and garden design; it remains a Vancouver-based non-profit society devoted to the cultivation and study of hardy perennials in the Pacific Northwest.

Programme and Speakers

Twice a year, generally in February/March and October/November, the Group hosts the Spring and Fall Study Days at the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre Auditorium in Vancouver, and over the years has welcomed Christopher Lloyd, Fergus Garrett, Roy Lancaster, Piet Oudolf, Anna Pavord, Helen Dillon, David Culp, Will McLewin, William Cullina, Dan Hinkley, David Tarrant, Chris Beardshaw and many other distinguished gardeners as speakers.

Membership and Open Gardens

Membership runs on the calendar year at 30 CAD per member and includes a five-issue-per-year newsletter subscription; members also gain access to the Open Garden programme, which visits different gardens in the Lower Mainland during the spring and summer months and is open to members only.

Public Resources and Reading

The publicly curated Online Resources page collects links to Pacific Northwest plantings guides such as Great Plant Picks, horticultural publications including Horticulture Magazine and Timber Press, public gardens such as Kew and the Washington Native Plant Society, and a long list of contemporary horticulturians to follow on Facebook and Instagram, making it a frequently used reading list for local gardeners.

Regional Gardens and Peer Links

The Group maintains a Gardens to Visit directory that points members and the public to botanical destinations across British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest, including Glendale Gardens & Woodland, Milner Gardens and Woodland, Sunshine Coast Botanical Garden Society in BC, and Bellevue Botanical Garden, Kruckeberg Botanic Garden, Dunn Gardens, and the Elisabeth Carey Miller Botanical Garden in Washington State, supporting regional garden-based exchange.
