The Bonsai Society of Greater Cincinnati (BSGC), founded in 1964, is one of the oldest bonsai societies in the United States and the earliest such organization in the American Midwest. For over six decades, BSGC has been dedicated to helping people learn, study, and appreciate the art of bonsai.
History
The society originated from a group interested in Japanese Ikebana (flower arranging). In September 1964, approximately ten to twelve members held their first meeting at the Civic Garden Center, where they established the society’s purpose: “the study and appreciation of the art of bonsai, the development of horticulture skills, the sharing of our knowledge and the enjoyment, and a keener awareness of nature.” In its early years, the society organized bonsai displays and live demonstrations at the Krohn Conservatory, gradually expanding to hold annual major exhibitions at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens. As membership grew, the society moved to the Civic Garden Center and established regular public meetings on the third Thursday of each month.
Institutional Character and Member Services
BSGC is a non-profit membership organization with approximately 125 members. The society hosts annual public bonsai exhibitions, beginner workshops, and member-exclusive skill-building sessions, regularly featuring internationally renowned bonsai artists for lectures and live demonstrations—including legendary figures such as John Naka and Frank Okamura. Annual membership costs $45, granting access to paid workshops, forums, resource libraries, and an exclusive bonsai tree gallery.
Bonsai Collection and the Krohn Conservatory Gallery
The society maintains the John Carroll Bonsai Gallery at the Cincinnati Krohn Conservatory, showcasing bonsai specimens from around the world, including tropical, deciduous, and coniferous species. Notable pieces include a North American Ponderosa Pine exceeding 380 years in age and a Japanese Black Pine over 160 years old. The society has also compiled a comprehensive glossary of bonsai terminology, along with tree size and styling guides, providing invaluable learning resources for enthusiasts.
