Site Environment and Climate

Cross Hills Gardens and Nursery is located in the Kimbolton district of New Zealand’s North Island, sitting 540 metres above sea level on well-drained soil with an average annual rainfall of 1140 millimetres. Winters are cold with snowfalls, while a year-round mountain spring supplies clean water. These alpine conditions mirror the Himalayan and Chinese mountain habitats from which the majority of rhododendron species originate, providing an ideal growing environment for the genus.

Estate History and Four Generations

Development of the property from virgin bush began around 1886, when the first settler built a modest dwelling sheltered by cupressus macrocarpas, two of which still stand in the front parking area. Eric Wilson, the founder, purchased the farm in 1938 and gradually developed the 240 hectare property into a productive sheep and cattle hill farm. After a new homestead was built in 1951, native and exotic trees including many rhododendrons were planted, and successive gardens were added from 1970 onward: the Cafe Garden in 1970, the South Hill Garden in 1972, the Azalea Bowl in 1982, the Middle Flat in 1984-85, the Far Flat in 1986-89, and the Millennium Maze with camellia hedges in 2000.

Garden Composition and Rhododendron Collection

The gardens comprise the Cafe Garden, South Hill Garden, Conifer Valley, Middle Flat, Far Flat, Clematis Bank, Waterfall and Ornamental Pools, and the Millennium Maze with 30 camellia varieties and over 1000 hedge plants. The collection contains one of the world’s finest assemblages of rhododendrons and azaleas, with continuing importation expanding the range year by year. The Plant Centre specialises in field-grown rhododendrons and azaleas raised on site in Kimbolton, ensuring healthy non root-bound specimens that establish well after transplanting.

Plant Centre and Sales Services

The Plant Centre operates from 10 June through 15 November, 10.30am to 5pm daily, with Saturday opening from 1pm between 10 June and 1 October. Visitors can select from advanced sized specimens specially grown to fill large garden gaps. The nursery also produces and sells aluminium Lifetime Plant Labels and Tree Health Bands developed for thrips control on rhododendrons. Online plant orders are available for collection or despatch from late June to the end of November.

Visitor Services and Public Engagement

The garden is open 365 days a year with peak flowering from 12 October to 22 November. Wheelchair access, electric scooters and free wheelchairs are available throughout, and the Magic Mini tour vehicle carries nine passengers on a 35 minute circuit for those unable to walk the full distance. Children enjoy the Millennium Maze, and visitors may picnic in designated grassed areas. The annual Cross Hills Gardens Country Fair, held on the third Saturday of November, features over 200 artisan and grower stalls. Admission is free for children, while guided group tours can be booked in advance.
