Ontario Wildflowers、Ontario Trees & Shrubs、Ontario Ferns、World of Mosses、Ontario Insects

站点首页明确写到「目前共有 40 个物种上线,另有 92 个物种待补充」,整体收录目标指向安大略省境内能观察到的禾本类草本植物,并明确说明这些类群中绝大多数也能在北美东部乃至世界其他温带区域找到;分类上以 Poaceae(禾本科)、Cyperaceae(莎草科)和 Juncaceae(灯心草科)三个科为骨架,已收录的 25 种禾本以 Switch Grass(Panicum virgatum)、Big Bluestem(Andropogon gerardii)、Indian Grass(Sorghastrum nutans)、Little Bluestem(Schizachyrium scoparium)、Sweetgrass(Anthoxanthum hirtum)等北美草原与湿地常见种为代表,13 种莎草以 Bladder Sedge(Carex intumescens)、Golden Sedge(Carex aurea)、Schweinitz’s Umbrella Sedge(Cyperus schweinitzii)等为典型,2 种灯心草则收录 Baltic Rush(Juncus balticus)与 Hairy Wood Rush(Luzula acuminata);所有物种拉丁学名自 2014 年 11 月 18 日起按加拿大权威植物命名 VASCAN 进行更新。

Habitat 一栏按 Forests、Fields and Open Areas、Wet Areas(含 Bogs and Fens、Lakes、Lakeshores、Lake Beaches、Seashores、Ponds、Pond Margins、Riverbanks、Marshes、Swamps、Shrub Swamps、Mud)、Meadows、Moist Meadows、Sand Dunes、Alvars、Roadsides、Thickets、Open Forests、Lawns、Cliffs and Rock Faces、Disturbed Sites and Waste Places、Limestone Barrens、Sandy Places、Bottomlands 等 20 余个生境类型组织,但站点明确写到「目前仅前三个大类被填写,且仍不完整」;可食性方面,Edible 列表中已收入 Golden Sedge(Carex aurea),并明确备注其小型金色坚果(nutlets)可食,同时列出 Poisonous 列表作为反向索引,且整页加粗提示读者「YOU, and ONLY YOU, are responsible for determining whether a particular species of plant is edible」;外来与本地物种专题还解释了 Non-native 与 Alien 等同概念,并以 Newcombe’s Wildflower Guide 等著作作为本地种判定依据,延伸到姊妹站点 Earth Caretaker 进一步讨论入侵种生态影响。

Ontario Wildflowers、Ontario Trees & Shrubs、Ontario Ferns、Ontario Grasses、World of Mosses、Ontario Insects

Author Background and Maintenance

Ontario Grasses, Sedges & Rushes (ontariograsses.com) is a long-running online field guide maintained by Walter Muma, a private individual based in Ontario, Canada, focused on the grasses, sedges and rushes that occur in the province and on similar taxa across eastern North America and other temperate regions. It sits inside the same Muma-curated botany network as Ontario Wildflowers, Ontario Trees & Shrubs, Ontario Ferns, World of Mosses and Ontario Insects, and shares an identical copyright framework with his Wildwood Survival, Wildwood Tracking, Stone Age Skills and Tracker Trail outdoor-teaching sites, with all photographs credited to the author unless otherwise noted.

Coverage and Taxonomic Scope

The home page states that 40 species are currently featured with 92 more to come, and the broader goal is to document every graminoid that can be observed in Ontario. The taxonomy is built around three families — Poaceae (the grass family), Cyperaceae (the sedge family) and Juncaceae (the rush family) — with 25 grasses so far (including Switch Grass / Panicum virgatum, Big Bluestem / Andropogon gerardii, Indian Grass / Sorghastrum nutans, Little Bluestem / Schizachyrium scoparium and Sweetgrass / Anthoxanthum hirtum), 13 sedges (Bladder Sedge / Carex intumescens, Golden Sedge / Carex aurea, Schweinitz’s Umbrella Sedge / Cyperus schweinitzii and others) and 2 rushes (Baltic Rush / Juncus balticus and Hairy Wood Rush / Luzula acuminata). Latin names have been brought into line with the Canadian authority VASCAN since 18 November 2014.

Search and Identification Tools

Navigation exposes four top-level entry points — Grasses, Sedges, Rushes and Grasslike Plants — together with secondary indexes by Common name, Latin name, French name, Name Search, Genus, Families, Groups, Habitat, Flowering Season, Alien/Native status and Edibility. Species lookups support both exhaustive synonym lists and the single preferred name in two parallel orderings, and Carl Rothfels’s “A Brief Overview of Sedges” is included as extended reading on sedge identification. The current look-and-feel dates from a 28 February 2014 redesign.

Habitats and Edibility Index

Habitats are arranged into roughly twenty categories (Forests, Fields and Open Areas, Wet Areas with sub-zones such as Bogs and Fens, Lakes, Lakeshores, Lake Beaches, Seashores, Ponds, Pond Margins, Riverbanks, Marshes, Swamps, Shrub Swamps, Mud, Meadows, Moist Meadows, Sand Dunes, Alvars, Roadsides, Thickets, Open Forests, Lawns, Cliffs and Rock Faces, Disturbed Sites and Waste Places, Limestone Barrens, Sandy Places and Bottomlands), although the author notes that only the first three have been entered and even those remain incomplete. Edibility pages so far cover Golden Sedge (Carex aurea) whose small golden nutlets are listed as edible, paired with a Poisonous Species index and an explicit reminder that the visitor alone is responsible for safe identification; Alien/Native material cites Newcombe’s Wildflower Guide and links out to the sister Earth Caretaker site for fuller invasive-species context.

Sister Sites and Community Resources

Every page closes with the full Muma network: an Ontario botany cluster (Ontario Wildflowers, Ontario Trees & Shrubs, Ontario Ferns, Ontario Grasses, World of Mosses, Ontario Insects), an outdoor-skills cluster (Wildwood Survival, Wildwood Tracking, Stone Age Skills, Tracking Quiz, Tracker Trail, Grey-Bruce Wildflowers), and a travel-and-tracking cluster (James Bay Road, Rupert River, Trans-Labrador Hwy, Moped Trip, Wild Ontario, Wildwood Canada, Mumart, Earth Caretaker, Wildwood Trackers, Ontario Trackers, Orangeville Trackers) — seventeen sibling projects in all. The Links page additionally surfaces a Latin-name synonym reference and keeps Walter Muma’s email open for reporting outdated links or sending corrections.
