Amador Flower Farm is a family-run specialty nursery and demonstration garden located in Plymouth, Amador County, California, in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley wine region of the Sierra Foothills. Founded in 1996 by Jeanne Deaver, a retired banking executive, together with her husband Ken, a long-time grape grower, the property has grown from a personal daylily hobby into a 14-acre working farm that combines daylily propagation, retail gardening gifts, and seasonal family programming open to the public free of charge.
Family Founding and Farm Origins
Jeanne began the daylily planting with 600 named cultivars and over the years expanded the collection to more than 1,200 varieties that are now grown, displayed, and sold on site. Four acres of the property are laid out as landscaped demonstration gardens with a waterfall, a pond, and picnic areas, while the remaining acreage supports the commercial nursery, pumpkin patch, corn maze, and a small vineyard. Visitors are invited to wander the garden paths year round, and the farm regularly hosts blue herons, egreons, wood ducks, kingfishers, hawks, mallards, and the occasional coyote, reinforcing its character as both a horticultural destination and a wildlife refuge.
Cultivar Scale and Display Garden Status
The nursery holds an official American Hemerocallis Society Display Garden designation, has received a landscape-design special award from the California Garden Club, and has repeatedly been voted Best Nursery in Amador County. In the broader Sacramento regional survey of more than forty garden centers, Amador Flower Farm has placed in the top five for several consecutive years and reached the third spot in 2018. Because daylilies are drought tolerant and largely pest free, the farm actively helps California gardeners convert thirsty landscapes into water-wise plantings, and the nursery now complements its daylily catalogue with a growing succulent selection, seasonal vegetable starts, and edible crops such as grapes, fruit, nuts, pumpkins, and gourds.
Visiting Experience and Seasonal Activities
The grounds are open daily from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm from March through November, and shift to Thursday-through-Sunday hours, closed Mondays and Tuesdays, from December through February. The on-site gift shop stocks wind chimes, gardening tools, kid-sized gardening kits, snacks, cold drinks, jams, dressings, soup mixes, gift baskets, and potted daylilies available for same-day purchase with picture-and-price plant stakes. A spring Easter Egg Hunt hosted with the Plymouth Rotary and an October pumpkin patch with a free corn maze, free weekend tram tours, hay bale maze, and farm-animal visits have become signature family traditions across the seasons.
Planting Guidance and Order Shipping
Daylilies tolerate a wide range of soils but prefer neutral to slightly acid loam, thrive in full sun or four to six hours of direct light, and should be spaced 12 to 30 inches apart depending on intended clump size. Dormant-foliage cultivars suit USDA Zones 3 to 9, semi-evergreens cover Zones 5 to 11, and evergreens perform best in Zones 8 to 11, so climate-zone selection at ordering time is essential. Bare-root daylilies ship from March through October and pause from November to February, while gift-shop merchandise is mailed year round; orders meet a 25 dollar minimum before tax and shipping, postage is billed at 15 dollars plus 50 cents per plant via UPS west of the Rockies or USPS Priority Mail east of the Rockies, and every plant ships as a double fan or larger with a satisfaction guarantee for replacement or refund.
