Grace Gardens Home of Graceful Daylilies

Tom 与 Kathy 自 1990 年代起专注”晚花”杂交方向,旨在将盛花期后延至 7 月下旬至 8 月初,弥补 Finger Lakes 地区 8 月花期空档;累计推出自育品种逾 150 个,分 Tom(56 个前作 + 2017/2019/2020/2023 多批新作)与 Kathy(50 个前作 + 2017/2019/2020/2023 多批新作)两支线。

Overview

Grace Gardens is a family-operated daylily (Hemerocallis) display garden located on the western shore of Seneca Lake in Yates County, New York, between the village of Penn Yan and the city of Geneva. Established in 1994 by Tom Rood and his late wife Kathy, the five-acre garden is named in memory of Tom’s mother Grace Rood, who began growing daylilies at the family home in 1957. Over thirty years, the garden has assembled more than 2,000 registered daylily cultivars, including ADS award winners and 150-plus Tom and Kathy introductions, and is recognized as an official American Daylily Society (ADS) Display Garden. Visitors are welcome free of charge during the late-June through early-August public season, with mid-July marking peak bloom. Mail orders of field-grown double fans ship via USPS Priority Mail from May 15 through October 15.

Founding History and Naming

Grace Gardens takes its name from Tom Rood’s mother Grace Rood, who began hybridizing daylilies at the family property in 1957 and in 1972 transferred her personal collection of more than 400 cultivars to Tom and Kathy’s home. In 1994, the couple cleared a portion of an adjacent vineyard on the gentle east-sloping terrain of the Finger Lakes region and laid out the present garden, expanding the original stock with over 2,000 modern cultivars. The site sits within the so-called Banana Belt microclimate of Seneca Lake, whose 35-mile-long, 600-foot-deep water mass moderates upstate New York winters and extends the growing season enough to support late-blooming hybridizing work. Kathy Rood passed away in 2020, and her ashes rest in Bed 2 East of the display garden. The garden is maintained by Tom with the help of Mennonite volunteer weeders.

Collection Scope and Hybridizing Program

The garden is dedicated exclusively to hybrid daylilies (Hemerocallis hybrida). Its current holdings exceed 2,000 registered cultivars, including several ADS award winners and one of the largest public assemblages of Pauline Henry’s “SILOAM” series daylilies. Tom and Kathy began hybridizing in the 1990s with the deliberate aim of pushing bloom later than the regional mid-July peak, producing late-blooming cultivars that extend the Finger Lakes daylily season into late July and early August. The program has yielded more than 150 introductions to date, divided between Tom’s line (56 prior releases plus 2017, 2019, 2020, and 2023 introductions) and Kathy’s line (50 prior releases plus 2017, 2019, 2020, and 2023 introductions). Cultivars are organized by horticultural traits—tetraploid, spider, double, unusual form, fragrant, evergreen, semi-evergreen, and dormant—and every registered plant is labeled.

Public Visiting and ADS Display Garden Status

Grace Gardens is an officially recognized American Daylily Society Display Garden and is open to visitors free of charge. Public hours run from late June through early August, Thursdays through Saturdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.; visitors traveling from a distance are encouraged to call ahead to confirm staff presence. Peak bloom falls in mid-July, with Tom’s late-blooming introductions reaching their peak slightly later, around the third week of July. The garden provides multiple benches, shade structures, and a picnic table, and restrooms are available nearby at Fox Run Vineyards. The site lies roughly an hour’s drive from Syracuse, Rochester, Ithaca, and Elmira-Corning, and is surrounded by more than ten Finger Lakes wineries within two miles. As of 2026 the annual open house has been discontinued, but walk-in visitors remain welcome during scheduled hours.

Mail Orders and Shipping

Mail orders are accepted from May 15 through October 15 and ship via USPS Priority Mail within the United States only; Canadian and European orders are no longer accepted as of 2026. Shipping is charged at $17 for the first four plants plus $0.75 for each additional plant, with free shipping on U.S. orders over $150; New York State addresses must add 8 percent sales tax. Prices are listed in U.S. dollars and quoted per double fan, with two single fans supplied when the double fan is sold out. A small number of sold-out cultivars may become available for late-August through September delivery. Grace Gardens is a rust-free nursery registered and inspected by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets. Cultivars are guaranteed true to name and to arrive in good condition.
