About the Society
The Point Grey Chrysanthemum Association, based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, is a community-based chrysanthemum hobby group that has been promoting mum cultivation and cultivar exchange across the Lower Mainland since 1937, making it one of the longest-running amateur chrysanthemum societies in the region.
Monthly Meetings and Member Exchange
Regular meetings are held in the Cedar Room at VanDusen Gardens in Vancouver, on the second Thursday of each month at 7:30 pm, with no meetings in April, June, July, or December. Members travel in from across the lower mainland to learn from experienced exhibitors and share their own tips on growing better mums.
Semi-annual Shows and Cutting Sales
The society holds two formal shows each year: an Early Chrysanthemum Show at VanDusen Gardens in early September and a Late Chrysanthemum Show at Garden Works in nearby Burnaby in early November. Both shows are open to the public free of charge, and the society also runs occasional special cutting sales so that local enthusiasts can pick up rooted cuttings of member-grown cultivars.
Talks and Growing Techniques
Past talks at the meetings have covered taking cuttings, stopping and feeding, the photoperiodic response of chrysanthemums, shortening the growing season for late shows, and growing stock plants. These talks draw on hands-on experience from members and are especially useful for newer growers working with ten-inch containers on a patio or deck.
Photo Archive and Mum Culture
The society has been holding shows every year since 2006 and keeps an extensive Photo Gallery archive organized by year, covering eleven seasons of early and late shows from 2006 through 2017. The chrysanthemum itself is known in Asia as the queen of flowers; its name comes from the Greek for gold flower, and the plant has long appeared in Chinese poetry and ceramics, while Japan adopted it as the imperial crest in the eighth century and later made the ninth day of the ninth month a national festival of the chrysanthemum.
