Overview

The Irish Garden Plant Society (IGPS), founded in 1981, is a voluntary amateur society with charity status. Its core mission is researching, finding, and propagating Irish plants to ensure their survival. The Society’s secretariat is based at the National Botanic Gardens in Glasnevin, Dublin, and the Society maintains close ties with leading horticultural institutions both domestically and internationally.

While the Society maintains a general interest in all plants and gardens, it holds a special affection for Irish heritage plants, aiming to promote their cultivation, propagation, and distribution among gardening enthusiasts across Ireland.

Three Regional Branches

The Society is organized into three regional branches covering all of Ireland: the North (centered on Belfast), Leinster (centered on Dublin), and Munster (centered on Cork). Each branch organizes regular programmes of summer garden visits and winter lectures, providing members with opportunities to learn from and connect with fellow gardening enthusiasts.

These three regional branches form a comprehensive network across Ireland, ensuring that members from all parts of the country can participate in Society activities and access the resources available through IGPS.

Research and Conservation Mission

The Irish Garden Plant Society plays a pivotal role in the conservation of Irish native and heritage plants. Its primary objective is to research, locate, and propagate Irish plants to ensure their survival and prevent their loss from cultivation. For instance, primulas such as ‘Dark Rosaleen’ thrive in Irish conditions but could easily be lost without organizations like the IGPS working to preserve them.

Beyond plant conservation, the Society is actively involved in researching great Irish gardens and garden history, covering both garden history and horticultural culture. Society members also play a hands-on role in several garden restoration projects, demonstrating the Society’s commitment to preserving Ireland’s horticultural heritage.

Publications

The Society publishes two major periodicals. The IGPS Newsletter is distributed monthly to all members, featuring news of forthcoming events, detailed articles on plants and gardens, book reviews, and more. As the website is currently being redeveloped in 2026, an archive of newsletters is progressively being added to the Publications section.

The Society’s academic journal, Moorea, was first published in 1982 and distributed to all members during its year of publication. It contains papers on the history of Irish gardens and garden plants, gardening practices in Ireland, botanical notes, and book reviews. Selected back issues are available for purchase, and all back issues of Moorea are accessible in PDF format.

International Exchange and Recognition

The Irish Garden Plant Society actively promotes Irish horticulture on the international stage. The Society has received multiple awards at major international exhibitions, including the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show in the United Kingdom, reflecting international recognition of Irish horticultural achievements.

The Society maintains close partnerships with leading horticultural organizations worldwide, including the National Botanic Gardens in Glasnevin, the Alpine Garden Society, the Royal Horticultural Society of Ireland, Plant Heritage, and the Royal Horticultural Society (UK).

Membership and Activities

The Society offers a wide range of activities, including lectures, workshops, and garden visits. As the Society’s website is being redeveloped in 2026, upcoming events are listed on the homepage. The Society also maintains an active Facebook page (facebook.com/IrishGardenPlantSociety) where regular posts about plants, gardens, and announcements are shared.

Society blogs are posted by members and reflect the opinions of the individual authors rather than those of the Society as a whole; each blog is signed by its author. Members can register for additional benefits, including access to the newsletter and journal, priority registration for events, and more.
