About the Society

The San Diego Epiphyllum Society (SDES) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization headquartered in San Diego County, California. The society has served the epiphyllum gardening community for over 50 years, with the earliest EpiNews newsletter archives dating back to 1976. Members include hobbyists from across the United States and abroad, but the core of the membership is concentrated in the San Diego metropolitan area. SDES’s mission is to encourage the study, cultivation, display, and collection of epiphyllums and related epiphytic cactus species. Regular meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in Room 101 of the Casa del Prado building in Balboa Park, San Diego. December meetings are replaced by a holiday dinner party. The society publishes the EpiNews newsletter, maintains the public SDES website, and supports the cultivation display at the San Diego Safari Park.

Annual Mother’s Day Flower Show and Plant Sale

The Mother’s Day Flower Show is SDES’s largest public event, held annually on Mother’s Day weekend in May. The show takes place at the Casa del Prado in Balboa Park, featuring hundreds of blooming epiphyllum plants with flower diameters ranging from under 2 inches to over 9 inches. Colors include purples, pinks, oranges, reds, yellows, whites, and many combinations. The show is widely regarded as one of the largest epiphyllum hybrid flower shows in the United States. The accompanying Mother’s Day weekend plant and cutting sale runs Saturday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day, offering a wide selection of epiphyllum cuttings and potted plants ranging from 4-inch starter pots to 1-gallon specimens. SDES members staff the event, providing cultivation advice to visitors. SDES also maintains a public epiphyllum display garden at the San Diego Safari Park, which is open during the late spring and early summer bloom season.

Membership and Monthly Meetings

SDES meetings are open to all visitors. First-time guests receive a 4-inch potted epiphyllum plant as a complimentary gift from the society (one per household). Monthly meetings begin at 7:30 p.m. and end around 9:00 p.m., opening with a short business session followed by a guest presentation on topics such as plant photography, hybridizing techniques, horticultural history, and San Diego garden history. Membership benefits include a subscription to the EpiNews newsletter, access to the members-only online gallery containing over 2000 photographs of epiphyllum hybrids, and participation in the monthly cutting raffle. Cultivation and Hybridizer Resources

SDES publishes comprehensive epiphyllum cultivation guidance on its public website. The society recommends filtered light (50% to 60% shade), well-draining soil, balanced watering, and temperatures between 45 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Epiphyllums tolerate brief exposure to temperatures as low as 28 to 32 degrees Fahrenheit but should be protected from extended freezing conditions. Epiphyllum hybrids are created by crossing epiphytic cactus species from genera such as Disocactus and Selenicereus, both native to the tropical rainforests of Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. Hybridizers within SDES contribute new cultivar names to the international registry maintained by the Epiphyllum Society of America.
