University of California Botanical Garden

Garden Overview

The University of California Botanical Garden at Berkeley is situated at the top of Strawberry Canyon on the UC Berkeley campus, spanning 34 acres. It houses one of the largest plant collections in North America, with over 10,000 species of wild-collected plants from nearly every continent, with a strong emphasis on Mediterranean-climate species. The Garden is administered by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and is the only member of UC Berkeley’s Natural History Museum Consortium open to the public. Located at 200 Centennial Dr, Berkeley, CA 94720-5045.

History

Formally established in 1890, the University of California Botanical Garden was the first garden in the UC system. Founded by E. L. Greene, the first chairman of the Department of Botany, its original purpose was to create a living collection of native trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants of California, quickly expanding to include neighboring Pacific Coast states. Within two years the collection held 600 species; within a decade it grew to 1,500 species, and ultimately expanded globally to approximately 10,000 species from six continents.

Geographic Collections and Specialized Collections

The Garden is organized into geographic collections representing major biomes: Asia, Australasia, California, Eastern North America, Mediterranean, Mexico and Central America, Deserts of the Americas, South America, and Southern Africa. Beyond these, specialized thematic collections include the renowned Orchid, Fern, and Carnivorous Plant House, the Cycad and Palm Garden, the Chinese Medicinal Herb Garden, Japanese Garden Pool, Rose Garden, and Herb Garden. Four of these collections—cycads, ferns, magnolias, and oaks—have received national recognition from the Plant Collections Network of the American Public Gardens Association and USDA.

Conservation

The Garden joined the national Center for Plant Conservation (CPC) in 1987, a network of over 75 botanical gardens dedicated to preventing plant extinction in the United States. Its conservation program employs four methods: seed banking, frozen leaf tissue banking, herbarium documentation, and collaborative propagation and reintroduction with other California gardens. Data from the cycad, magnolia, and oak collections are also contributed to the Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) consortia.

Education and Research

As a vital living laboratory for UC Berkeley, the Garden supports campus teaching and global scientific research. Every plant is carefully labeled with its accession number, family, scientific name, place of origin, and common name, with detailed life-cycle records maintained for each specimen. The Garden welcomes school groups and the general public year-round, serving as a major environmental education center for the San Francisco Bay Area.
