Starting from a Rented Parcel in Lisse

Jansen’s Overseas B.V. was founded in 1964 by Rein Jansen. After finishing horticultural school in Lisse, he started out at twenty-one, renting parcels of land to grow flower bulbs; a few years later he bought a plot with a flower bulb barn on it in Noordwijkerhout. He worked the nursery in spring, summer and autumn, and spent the winter months travelling through Europe and the United States to sell his bulbs, which is how he built up a steady clientele.

The company is still based in Noordwijkerhout, in the heart of the bulb-growing area known as the Bollenstreek, and the third generation has now taken over. Son-in-law Dennis van der Krogt joined in 1996 and has served on the management board since 2010, when Roland Duindam joined the management team as well. In July 2024 the company posted a notice on its own website reporting the death of founder Rein Jansen.

The Main Bulb Supplier to Keukenhof

Jansen’s Overseas supplies Keukenhof, the largest spring garden in the world, in Lisse. The tulip hill at the entrance, named “Jansens” after the company, carries sixty thousand tulips in a range of colours and flowering times, arranged so that visitors always find something in bloom.

The company states the relationship itself: its English site names the Royal Household of Keukenhof among its titles, and the Chinese page of the site says it is a main supplier to Keukenhof, the world’s largest spring garden. Alongside bulbs the range includes potted plants such as helleborus, skimmia, gaultheria, pernettya and pine.

Loose Bulbs, Potted Bulbs and Pre-packed Boxes

The range is grouped by how it is delivered: loose bulbs, potted raised bulbs, pre-packaged flower bulbs, and wax amaryllis and wax hyacinths. Potted bulbs have been part of the business since 1984 and are marketed in various delivery stages to match what buyers need. The English site describes the company as a specialist in prepared flower bulbs and in bulbs on pot.

Every catalogue is digital. For the 2026 season there is a loose bulb catalogue, an autumn and Christmas catalogue for the fourth quarter, and a 2026/2027 catalogue for pre-planted and potted bulbs, alongside a PDF explaining labels and symbols and a bulb search engine. The engine filters by species, type, colour and letter, covering hyacinths, tulips, daffodils, amaryllis, companion plants and landscape mixtures.

Ten Halls and Thirty-One Climate-Controlled Stores

The site covers ten industrial buildings with a combined floor area of fifteen thousand square metres. Thirty-one climate-controlled storage units hold thirty-eight thousand cubic metres in total and run with round-the-clock monitoring. Outside there are two further plots of two thousand five hundred square metres each, one for materials and crates and one for loading and unloading.

Quality is checked in three places. The test centre and sample greenhouse raise samples from every batch to check quality and whether the bulbs will flower, and new varieties are trialled there first. The laboratory inspects each batch internally to find hidden defects and to determine the stage of the bulb. The company’s own nursery grows its varieties at several locations.

From Professional Growers to Public Parks

Customers are professional bulb growers, garden centres, flower shops, wholesalers and public parks across the globe. Registered customers order straight from the nursery, see current stock and prices, place orders around the clock and get a transport cost calculated on the spot. General sales conditions are kept per country: Germany, France, the United Kingdom and Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Austria, Poland, Spain, the USA and Canada, Sweden and Switzerland.

The team numbers twenty-six people. Dennis van der Krogt is commercial director and Roland Duindam is managing director; sales is split by market, with one manager covering the USA, Canada, China and Dubai.
