A Century-Old Urban Oasis
Brooklyn Botanic Garden was founded in 1910 by botanist Charles Stuart Gager, with the original site plan designed by the Olmsted Brothers firm. The Garden officially opened to the public on May 13, 1911, and now encompasses 52 acres, making it one of America’s most significant urban botanic gardens. BBG’s mission is to connect people to the wonder and power of plants, striving to preserve precious green space within New York City.
Notable Gardens
The Garden features an array of themed gardens: the Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden, completed in 1915, was one of the first public Japanese gardens in the United States; the Cranford Rose Garden houses hundreds of rose varieties; the Native Flora Garden focuses on the conservation and display of North American native plants; and the Shakespeare Garden is planted with species mentioned in the Bard’s works. The Children’s Garden, established in 1914, is one of the nation’s earliest urban horticulture education programs for children, occupying approximately one acre.
Conservatories & Plant Collections
BBG’s conservatory complex includes: the Bonsai Pavilion, whose collection began in 1925 with a gift of 32 bonsai specimens; the Desert Pavilion showcasing drought-tolerant succulents; the Tropical Pavilion displaying rainforest flora; and the Warm Temperate Pavilion featuring plants from Mediterranean climates. Notable collections include Japanese cherry blossoms, lilacs, white magnolias, orchids, and tree peonies.
