About the Garden

The Huntsville Botanical Garden is located at 4747 Bob Wallace Avenue, Huntsville, Alabama. Founded in January 1980 through the Huntsville-Madison County Botanical Garden Society and opened to the public in 1986, this non-profit institution is dedicated to connecting people to plants to support a healthier quality of life for the region. The Garden provides accessible environments ensuring all visitors can fully enjoy their experience.

History

Without a physical space in the early years, meetings were held wherever possible—from kitchens to churches. The group’s determination paid off when the City Council granted them 35 acres of land with a challenge to raise $200,000. Defying expectations, the goal was met in just six months, marking the beginning of this extraordinary botanical garden that has since expanded to become one of Alabama’s most important botanical institutions.

Garden Areas

Notable attractions include the Purdy Butterfly House, where visitors can interact closely with butterflies during warm seasons; the Damson Aquatic Garden showcasing a variety of aquatic plants; the Bush Azalea Trail featuring abundant azalea displays; and the scenic Promenade connecting themed garden areas. Guided Tram Tours are available with knowledgeable operators sharing fascinating stories about the Garden’s history and plant collections.

Education & Conservation

The Huntsville Botanical Garden is deeply committed to public education and plant science. The Plant Science & Conservation team works on native plant protection and ex-situ conservation research. Educational programs serve all ages: youth camps for children, lectures and workshops for adults, and volunteer opportunities for community engagement. The Garden also partners with local schools to bring classroom learning into natural environments, enabling students to learn plant science through hands-on experience.

Visitor Information

Open year-round with seasonal hours (May-August: Mon-Wed & Sun 9 AM-6 PM, Thu-Sat 9 AM-8 PM). The Garden is a cashless venue. Guided Tram Tours are available, and group visits are recommended to book in advance.
