Vitro Plus is a family-run tissue-culture fern nursery located in Burgh-Haamstede, Zeeland, the Netherlands, founded in 1990 by John Bijl — a kwekerszoon (nurseryman’s son) — and now in its thirty-fifth year of operation. The nursery specializes in the sterile propagation, greenhouse cultivation and global wholesale supply of temperate and tropical ferns through its proprietary Vitro-Tray® and patented Vitro-Plug® delivery systems; its current catalog includes more than 150 fern varieties, its network spans 33 export countries, and 45 percent of its team has more than ten years of service. With annual output expected to reach 40 million ferns in 2024, the company supplies cut-flower growers, pot-plant nurseries, garden centers and landscape professionals across Europe, North America and Asia.
Founding: John Bijl and 35 Years of Fern Tissue-Culture Expertise
John Bijl, a kwekerszoon raised in a Dutch horticultural family, founded Vitro Plus in 1990 with a single principle: to develop products that directly answer the needs of customers and their markets. From the start the company has reinvested continuously in tissue-culture laboratory technique — the discipline of multiplying ferns from spores under sterile in-vitro conditions — and that sustained laboratory investment has earned the firm multiple industry innovation awards and a stream of new commercial cultivars. The company’s product philosophy is to keep “all our customers always able to access the newest varieties and the best quality at the most competitive price”, and that ethos governs everything from nutrient formulation in the laboratory, through acclimatization in the greenhouse, to the final grading of ready-to-ship trays. The unusual stability of the Vitro Plus workforce — with 45 percent of staff having served for more than ten years — is a direct expression of this long-horizon approach to fern horticulture, where mastering spore handling, sub-culture timing and agar protocols typically takes many growing seasons.
Vitro-Tray® and Vitro-Plug®: Two Patented Delivery Systems for Ferns
The Vitro-Tray® is Vitro Plus’ flagship delivery format and is used for the company’s tropical fern assortment. Each tray holds 500 stage-3 Asplenium plantlets on a standard 19.4 × 19.3 × 8 cm carrier, despatched ex-agar without gel and already feathered; on arrival the tray can be stored for up to five days under normal room conditions (kept away from direct sunlight and high temperatures, with the cover foil intact), after which the plantlets are pricked out by hand or by machine, transplanted into the chosen plug size, and grown on for roughly eleven weeks until they reach saleable pot size. The Vitro-Plug®, by contrast, is a patent-protected system in which fern clumps are raised sterile in the laboratory on Jiffy coco-peat plugs: the plantlets arrive slightly rooted, fully disease-free, and noticeably stronger than agar-only material, which shortens the growing-on cycle, reduces transplant loss, allows direct potting into smaller containers, makes hand-pricking fast and simple, and crucially allows all fern types — including hardy temperate species — to be transplanted automatically. Both formats sit behind a unified cultivation manual that specifies substrate mix (peat + perlite + coco, pH 5.5), K-P-N 24-8-16 nutrition, EC 1.25-1.75 irrigation water, magnesium supplementation and IPM regimes, so each shipment integrates seamlessly into the customer’s own greenhouse workflow.
Plant Health: Koppert-Synvital Resilience Programme and Strict Quality Control
Quality control at Vitro Plus begins in the laboratory: every plantlet is fully rooted and rigorously botanically identified before despatch, and any cultivar prone to reversion or morphological instability is culled so that only stable, true-to-type material reaches customers. Disease and pest pressure on ferns is in any case relatively low, and Vitro Plus works proactively with the Dutch biological-control specialists Koppert and Synvital on a weerbaarheid (plant resilience) programme that strengthens the plants’ own immunity through nutrition, growing conditions and microbial support; the result, by the firm’s own admission, is greenhouse fern stock that “looks healthy and strong” and tolerates bacterial, fungal and insect pressure far better than conventionally raised material. The nursery complements this biological approach with disciplined IPM (Integrated Pest Management) — sticky traps, scouting, hygiene barriers — so that incoming customers receive essentially pest- and disease-free trays and plugs. Since 2018 the firm has also published a bi-monthly digital newsletter, “Plant in de kijker” (Plant in the Spotlight), each issue of which profiles a different fern family for commercial growers, with notes on origin, cultivation requirements and market potential; the entire back-catalogue is archived on the website for global reference.
150 Varieties, 33 Countries, 40 Million Ferns: a Global Wholesale Network
Vitro Plus currently lists more than 150 fern varieties in its assortment and ships to 33 export countries, with annual nursery output projected to reach 40 million ferns in 2024 — placing it among the most consistent year-round wholesale suppliers of tissue-cultured ferns worldwide. The internal maxim “van spore tot varen, elke stap met zorg” (from spore to fern, every step with care) describes a fully traceable pipeline: sterile spore inoculation, agar multiplication, acclimatization in the greenhouse, transplantation onto Vitro-Tray® or Vitro-Plug®, and finally the customer’s own finishing cycle in their nursery. Alongside its standing catalog the firm offers long-running commercial workhorses such as Nephrolepis exaltata ‘Boston Blue Bell’ (the best-selling Boston fern in the range, finished at roughly 20,000 lux with summer shading required) and ‘Emerald Queen’ (a notably sun-tolerant selection that grows in full Florida sun without protection). Beyond standard wholesale, Vitro Plus also develops custom propagation runs, bespoke selections and brand-specific cultivars for major floriculture partners, and it keeps its global customer base updated through a regular quarterly e-newsletter that announces new releases, availability windows and cultivation refinements.
