About the Practice

Turenscape (Beijing Turen Urban Planning and Design Institute Co., Ltd.) was founded in January 1998 in Beijing by Dr. Kongjian Yu, a Doctor of Design from Harvard GSD and professor at Peking University. Headquartered in Zhongguancun, Haidian District, Beijing, the firm employs more than 500 professional designers and has completed over 2,000 planning and design projects across more than 200 cities worldwide, making it one of the largest and most awarded integrated landscape architecture practices in Asia.

Founder and Leadership

Dr. Kongjian Yu was a Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and former Dean of the College of Architecture and Landscape at Peking University, who passed away on 23 September 2025 in a plane crash during an ecological field study in Brazil’s Pantanal wetlands at the age of 62. The firm is now led by CEO Hongjin (Tony) Yu, supported by a Chief Engineer, Chief Architect, CFO and several Vice-Presidents and Chief Designers, with eight design studios plus Shanghai and Huangshan rural-revitalisation branches, sustaining multigenerational continuity and a collaborative studio-based governance model.

Service Scope and Qualifications

Turenscape holds Class A qualifications in Urban and Rural Planning (Territorial Spatial Planning), Landscape Engineering Design, Architectural Engineering Design and Territorial Planning, together with High-Tech Enterprise and Quality Management System certifications. Its services span territorial planning, urban design, tourism strategy, architectural design, landscape architecture and integrated design-build (EPC), covering urban parks, residential communities, commercial precincts, scenic destinations and historic-ecological conservation areas, positioning it among the few Chinese practices with both Class A planning credentials and full EPC delivery capacity.

Representative Projects and Design Philosophy

Rooted in the philosophy of Nature, Man, and Spirits as One and reframing landscape as an Art of Survival, Turenscape pioneered the theories of Negative Planning, the Sponge City, Big Feet Aesthetics and Deep Form. Signature works include Shanghai Houtan Park, Quzhou Luming Park, Qinhuangdao Red Ribbon Park, Xi’an Yannan Park, Nanchang Fish Tail Park, Handan Wastewater Cleansing Terraces, Haikou Meishe River Greenway and Fengxiang Park, Jiaxing Xinanhu Park, Suqian Santaishan Flower Quilt, Bangkok Benjakitti Forest Park and Sanya Mangrove Park, several of which are widely regarded as benchmarks for sponge-city and ecological restoration practice in Asia and beyond.

Industry Position and International Honours

The firm has received over 100 international design awards, including 17 ASLA Excellence and Honour Awards, 10 World Architecture Festival (WAF) prizes, 7 AZ Awards, the Holcim Awards, the ULI Excellence Award, the Cooper Hewitt National Design Award and the IFLA Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe Award. Its late founder Dr. Kongjian Yu was also honoured with the Oberlander International Landscape Architecture Prize and the RAIC International Prize, making Turenscape one of the most internationally recognised landscape architecture practices ever to emerge from Asia.
