The Orchid Society of South East Asia (OSSEA) is one of the oldest orchid societies in Asia, founded in Singapore in 1928 as the Malayan Orchid Society by John Laycock (a lawyer, politician, founder of Singapore’s Progressive Party and member of the colonial Legislative Assembly), Professor Eric Holttum (Director of the Singapore Botanic Gardens), and Emil Galistan (a civil servant). Following Singapore’s separation from Malaysia in the mid-1960s, the society was renamed to reflect its regional scope, with the Orchid Society of South East Asia continuing to serve Singapore, Malaysia, and the broader lowland tropical Asia region. The society is a non-profit professional organization headquartered at 25 Tagore Lane, #02-08, Singapore 787602, and currently counts nearly a century of continuous operation in orchid research, conservation, hybridization, and public education.
Mission and Member Services
OSSEA’s core mission centers on four pillars: the science and practice of orchid culture, orchid conservation, hybridisation and cultivation in tropical lowland Asia, and public engagement through talks, shows, visits to nurseries and national parklands, and publication of books and journals. The society welcomes members ranging from beginners to expert professional growers. Members receive monthly meetings on the first Sunday afternoon at the Singapore Botanic Gardens, monthly OSSEA Bulletin, the Malayan Orchid Review semi-annual journal, plant clinic access, orchid show volunteering opportunities, table-award competition entry, and the exclusive Orchid Naming service for personal commemoration of weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, or special events through OSSEA-handled RHS registration.
Membership Tiers and Benefits
OSSEA’s subscription structure is divided into six tiers based on residency and member category. Annual fees: Ordinary Member Singapore resident S$80, Spouse of Member Singapore resident S$40, Ordinary Member non-resident S$40, Spouse of Member non-resident S$25, Corporate Member Singapore-incorporated S$120, and Corporate Member not Singapore-incorporated S$100. Subscriptions are payable in advance on the first day of January each calendar year, with pro-rata reductions for mid-year joining (e.g. April joiners pay 75% of the full annual rate: S$60 / S$30 / S$90; July joiners pay 50%; October joiners pay 25%). Accepted payment methods include bank transfer and credit card. Member benefits include monthly meeting attendance, OSSEA Bulletin mailing, Malayan Orchid Review subscription, orchid show volunteer opportunities, table-award competition entry, and exclusive Orchid Naming service for personal commemoration. The Constitution 2009 Rev 1 v2a is the current governing document, available to members for download.
Presidents and Major Awards
The society’s president and General Committee roster has been continuously maintained since 1928. Two flagship awards define OSSEA’s contribution to Asian orchidology. The Eric Holttum Gold Medal, established in 1964 in memory of Professor Holttum’s contribution to orchid growing in Southeast Asia, is awarded only to orchid breeders resident in Singapore, Malaysia, and Brunei who have demonstrated local hybridisation excellence; the medal is engraved with Holttum’s portrait. The OSSEA Fellowship is the society’s highest honor, presented once every three years during the World Orchid Conference to individuals who have made important and visible contributions to orchidology, with a lifetime cap of 36 Fellows; recent presentation years include 2026 (24th WOC, Dresden), 2017 (22nd WOC, Guayaquil), 2014 (21st WOC, Johannesburg), 2011 (20th WOC, Singapore), 2008 (19th WOC, Miami), 2005 (18th WOC, Dijon), 2002 (17th WOC, Shah Alam), 1996, 1990, 1981, 1978, 1969, 1966, and 1963. The society also maintains the Hybrids Registered by OSSEA gallery, an authoritative reference for local hybrid pedigrees and parentage records. Its Orchid Naming service allows individuals to dedicate a personally selected hybrid orchid to commemorate a wedding anniversary, a loved one’s birthday, or a memorable event, with OSSEA handling the entire RHS registration and naming paperwork on the member’s behalf.
