History and Development

Darts Hill Garden Park in Surrey, British Columbia, grew from Edwin and Francisca Darts’s work on a 7.5-acre property acquired in 1943. They first developed an orchard and gradually transformed the land into a mature garden shaped by careful cultivation, plant exploration and long-term stewardship. The wider park now covers about 22.5 acres.

Plant Collections and Character

The garden has the character of a plantsman’s garden, with mature trees, shrubs and perennials arranged through winding paths, lawns and many planting beds. Francisca Darts developed a particular interest in rhododendrons and magnolias, while the garden’s seasonal structure provides interest throughout the year.

Francisca’s interest in horticulture deepened after she encountered an alpine gardening display in British Columbia. She built connections with horticultural organizations, including the Royal Horticultural Society, and obtained seeds and plant material that contributed to the garden’s unusual collection. The garden became part of Surrey’s public park landscape, with the Darts Hill Garden Conservancy Trust Society helping to support its legacy.
