A Family Wholesale Nursery in Gaston, Oregon

Buchholz & Buchholz Nursery is a family-run wholesale nursery located in Gaston, in northwestern Oregon, about an hour from Portland. Founded by Talon Buchholz in the early 1980s, the nursery grew out of his first purchase of six Japanese maples from the late J.D. Vertrees. Today it is operated by Matt and Tim Nichols, and supplies Japanese maples, dwarf and unusual conifers, and other choice ornamental trees and shrubs to wholesale growers, premium garden centers, and landscape designers across the United States and Canada.

Flora Wonder Arboretum and a Seven-Continent Collection

The Flora Wonder Arboretum grew directly out of the nursery, with planting beginning in 1981. It now holds thousands of plant species and cultivars representing all seven continents, including the Atlas Cedar of North Africa, the Dove Tree of Asia, the Wollemi Pine from Australia, the Giant Redwood of North America, and the Monkey Puzzle Tree of South America. The collection includes noteworthy species, natural and intentional hybrids, and selection cultivars obtained through purchase, trade, donation, or discovery by Mr. Buchholz and his team. Registered cultivars include Amber Ghost, Baby Ghost, Dark Ghost, First Ghost, Purple Ghost, Sister Ghost, Uncle Ghost, Grandma Ghost, and Martha’s Ghost, with leaves that shift through purple, pink, white, and gold across the seasons and a hallmark dark vein network. Beyond Japanese maples, Buchholz introductions span firs (Abies), bigleaf maples (Acer macrophyllum), paperbark maples (Acer griseum), and many other genera, propagated and distributed across North America, Europe, and Japan.
