Location & Collection Context

The Garden Museum is located in the London Borough of Lambeth on the South Bank, beside the Thames and Lambeth Bridge. Its principal building is the former St Mary’s church, whose churchyard holds the 17th-century tomb of John Tradescant the Elder (c.1570-1638) and his son John Tradescant the Younger (1608-1662), plant hunters and creators of Britain’s first publicly accessible private museum, “The Ark”, which Tradescant opened in Lambeth in 1629. Adjacent stands the Grade II* listed tomb of Captain William Bligh (1754-1817), whose epitaph commemorates his transplantation of the breadfruit tree from Tahiti to the West Indies.

Gardens & Exhibition Spaces

The permanent galleries trace the art, history and design of British gardening from the sixteenth century to the present day, displaying illustrations, horticultural tools, botanical material and original design archives. Outside, the Courtyard Garden by landscape designer Dan Pearson functions as a botanical cabinet of curiosities, while the Front Garden weaves shade-loving woodland planting with a Mediterranean dry garden around a welcoming piazza; across the road, the Community Garden in Old Paradise Gardens opened to the public in 2023 as part of the first phase of the wider Lambeth Green masterplan.

Learning Programme & Community Horticulture

The museum’s learning programme is open to everyone and is built around hands-on, multi-sensory experiences covering art, craft, cookery, food learning and plant science for schools, families and community groups, with more than 230 school and community sessions hosted in 2024. The Lambeth Green project, planned across roughly 5.3 acres adjacent to the museum, will create paid apprenticeships in horticulture for two local young people each year, in partnership with Capel Manor College, combining practical training in the new public gardens with classroom theory.

Benton End Restoration Project

Benton End in Hadleigh, Suffolk, is the former home of the artist-plantsman Sir Cedric Morris (1889-1982) and his lifelong partner Arthur Lett-Haines (1894-1978), co-founders of the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing whose pupils included Lucian Freud and Maggi Hambling. Cedric Morris bred over ninety named bearded iris cultivars, many carrying the Benton prefix, and his garden influenced a generation of British horticulture, including his protégé Beth Chatto. In 2021 the property was majority gifted to the Garden Museum by the Pinchbeck Charitable Trust, and the walled garden is being renewed in collaboration with landscape designer Sarah Price for limited public visits in summer 2026, with the longer Benton End Revived capital project supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and a number of charitable trusts.

Archive, Cafe & Venue Hire

The museum’s Archive preserves the working records of leading British garden designers for future generations of researchers, designers and the wider public. The on-site Garden Cafe serves a seasonal modern European menu and is open to visitors during museum hours, while the venue hosts weddings, film shoots and corporate events through its dedicated events team; current opening times, ticketing and group visit arrangements are published on the official website.
