苗圃沿革

Shikoku Bonsai Canada 由 Gerald Rainville 创办于 1983 年的蒙特利尔，是加拿大本土最早专注日本传统盆栽长期培育的苗圃之一。1987 年因气候与产地条件原因迁至不列颠哥伦比亚省温哥华近郊，1993 年最终定居 Sunshine Coast 的 Roberts Creek，建立以盆栽长期培育为核心业务的稳定苗圃。苗圃现有数千株由创始人亲手培育的成树，部分植株可追溯至 1980 年代，至今仍坚持每年赴日本高松回访师友、研习传统技法。

师承与日本传统

创始人 Gerald Rainville 于 1979 年自渥太华 Algonquin College 园艺专业毕业后，赴日本进入传统长期师承体系修行，是二十世纪少数在四国高松完成正式盆栽修业的西方学徒之一。师承期间他系统接受了真柏、黑松的播种、培育、整姿与盆养训练，并长期往返于高松、京都等地的盆栽名家之间。该背景使苗圃在树形构造、整姿节奏、长期盆养规划上保留典型的日本传统风格，与北美常见的速成型盆栽路线形成鲜明区别。

树苗培育体系

苗圃主营树种以日本黑松、虾夷松、Sargent 刺柏、Dwarf Japanese garden 刺柏、水杉为核心，全部由苗圃自行播种、移植、整姿、盆养，覆盖从幼苗到三十年以上成熟盆景的全周期。所有植株均按日本传统时间表养护，强调主干走势、枝托配置与树皮老化的长期平衡。苗圃同时维护历史培育档案，记录每株关键树种的修剪、换盆、施肥时间节点，方便后续买家了解树木背景与维护要点。

园林设计服务

除盆栽培育外，苗圃面向 Sunshine Coast 与大温地区提供日式庭园与综合园林景观设计服务，设计语言延续日本盆栽艺术对主枝、副枝、空间负形的处理方式。客户类型以私家庭院、商业酒店入口、餐厅内庭为主，强调石材、水流、植物群组之间的尺度关系与季节变化。设计师 Gerald 本人长期参与项目现场督造，确保作品在多年养护后仍能保持设计意图。

Nursery History

Shikoku Bonsai Canada was founded by Gerald Rainville in Montreal in 1983 as one of the earliest Canadian nurseries dedicated to long-term Japanese-style bonsai cultivation. The nursery relocated to the Vancouver area of British Columbia in 1987 and finally settled in Roberts Creek on the Sunshine Coast in 1993, where it has remained focused on long-cycle tree production. The collection now includes several thousand trees started and trained by the founder, with some specimens dating back to the 1980s.

Apprenticeship and Japanese Tradition

Gerald Rainville completed the horticulture program at Algonquin College in Ottawa in 1979 and then travelled to Japan to enter a traditional multi-year bonsai apprenticeship in the Takamatsu region of Shikoku. He is among the very few Western practitioners who finished a formal long-term apprenticeship in twentieth-century Japan. Training covered propagation, field growing, styling and long-term pot culture of black pine and juniper under established masters.

Tree Production System

The nursery specialises in Japanese black pine, Sargent juniper, Dwarf Japanese garden juniper and Dawn redwood, all raised on site from seed or cutting and trained according to traditional Japanese schedules. Trees are managed from young material through to mature specimens exceeding thirty years of age. Each tree carries a documented history of pruning, repotting and fertilisation cycles, allowing future owners to continue the long-term care programme.

Landscape Design Service

In addition to bonsai production, the nursery provides Japanese-style garden and landscape design services for the Sunshine Coast and greater Vancouver area. Design work extends the bonsai vocabulary of primary trunk, secondary branch and negative space into the larger garden, addressing stone placement, water flow and seasonal planting. Gerald Rainville oversees projects personally, ensuring that the intended design language is preserved through long-term maintenance.

The nursery operates by appointment only and does not maintain a walk-in retail counter. Visits, tree purchases and design consultations must be scheduled in advance through the official website or by phone before travelling to the Roberts Creek site.
