媒体长期跟踪报道:《Garden Making》2010 年春季刊以《WORTH THE DRIVE》专文推荐;《Hamilton Spectator》《National Post》《Toronto Star》《St.

Family-Run Retail Nursery Specializing in Dwarf and Unusual Plants

Vineland Nurseries is a family-run retail nursery located in the Niagara Peninsula of Ontario, Canada, founded by Jim and Simone Lounsbery in 1976 and now in its fifth decade. Jim fell in love with dwarf and unusual conifers, Japanese maples and rhododendrons back when these plants were practically unobtainable in local nurseries, and decided to make them available to ordinary home gardeners. The nursery is now run by Jim, Simone and their son Malcolm along with a long-standing staff, continuing the original mission: helping small-space gardeners discover plants that are out of the ordinary.

Three Core Lines and Eight Plant Categories

The current catalogue revolves around three core lines: dwarf and unusual evergreens (conifers such as pines, firs and spruces plus broadleaf evergreens), Japanese maples (Acer palmatum and many named cultivars) and rhododendrons and other rare flowering woodies. Beyond these three main lines the nursery maintains eight broader categories of plants — conifers, Japanese maples, broadleaf evergreens, deciduous trees, ground covers, vines, perennials and deciduous shrubs — covering virtually every hardiness need of southern Ontario home gardens. All stock is suited to USDA Zone 6a to 6b conditions in the Niagara region, and visitors can walk through the mature park-like display gardens to evaluate size, habit, colour and combination at mature scale.

Park-Like Display Gardens and Sustained Press Coverage

The nursery sits among the fruit orchards and wineries of southern Niagara, laid out as a park-like display garden where visitors can stroll paved paths and see established plants at mature size. The nursery is fully retail-oriented and welcomes both hobby gardeners and trade visitors to drop in, while remaining available by phone and email for specific stock inquiries. The garden has drawn sustained press attention over the years: Garden Making’s Spring 2010 premier issue ran a feature titled “WORTH THE DRIVE”; the Hamilton Spectator, National Post, Toronto Star, St. Catharines Standard and Town Crier have all profiled the nursery around dwarf conifers, compact plants for downsized gardens, bamboo in Canada and other niche topics.

Professional Background and Industry Memberships

Jim holds a diploma in Horticulture and is a Certified Arborist, has taught at Mohawk College’s Continuing Education horticulture programme and gives lectures, workshops and consultations across Ontario; Simone holds a Niagara Parks Diploma in Horticulture (NPD 97) with over thirty years of experience across nursery, landscape design, planting and consultation. The nursery maintains long-standing ties with industry bodies: Jim is a member of the American Conifer Society and the International Society of Arboriculture, taking part in plant exchanges and exhibition programmes. A long-ten-year family-and-staff team of around thirty people stays on site to advise on selection, identification and placement.
