Overview

Joy of Plants is a UK plant information company founded in 2011 and based in Twyford, Berkshire. It maintains a structured database covering more than 17,000 garden and indoor plants commonly sold in Britain, and builds sales tools that help garden centres, online shops and growers put that information to work at the point of sale. Plants are organised into over twenty horticultural groups (annuals, perennials, shrubs, trees, climbers, bulbs, ferns, herbs, fruit, succulents and more), and RHS Recommended / Award of Garden Merit plants are flagged and searchable within the Plant Finder.

Founders and Team

The company was founded by Terri Jones, a software-industry veteran and keen gardener, together with Susan A. Tindall, who compiled the original plant database over many years, having previously worked as a database specialist before retraining as a garden designer. Their long partnership still shapes how the library is built and updated: horticultural accuracy on one side, software product thinking on the other. The wider team is small and distributed across the UK and overseas, and the business has grown almost entirely through word of mouth with very little paid promotion.

The Plant Database

The library is the centre of the offering. Each plant carries a detailed record covering botanical and common names, flowering time, foliage, eventual height and spread, light and soil requirements, hardiness, typical garden uses and recommended Care Products, alongside photographs taken in British garden conditions and short sales-oriented descriptions. New additions from UK breeders and growers are added every year so that newly released plants appear across every sales tool as soon as they become available. In November 2025 the RHS ‘Plants for Pollinators’ mark was added across the library, so any qualifying plant now carries the bright yellow bee badge automatically on Bed Cards, in the Plant Finder and on every other retail tool.

Plant Finder and Sales Tools

Built on top of the library, the company offers a Plant Finder that works as a website plug-in, on staff phones, on in-store touchscreen kiosks, and inside retailers’ loyalty apps; print-on-demand Bed Cards that retailers can produce on their own printers on outdoor blanks; an Image and Text Library that feeds product pages on Shopify, WooCommerce and Bluepark webshops; and, launched in February 2025, ‘Inspirations’ – an automatic plant-marketing service that schedules seasonal screens on café or plant-area displays throughout the year. ‘Inspirations’ received the Best New Products award at the 2025 HTA National Plant Show.

Clients and Partners

The company now serves more than 200 retailers across the UK, including most of the country’s best-known Garden Centre Groups and many independent nurseries. Plant data contributions in 2024 and 2025 came from Farplants / Walberton’s, Seiont Nurseries, Kernock Park Plants (including Proven Winners®), Whartons Roses and New Leaf Plants, among others, while recent headlines include an October 2025 release adding the Walberton range wholesale plant data and an April 2025 release adding Kernock Park’s Proven Winners® range. Customer garden centre groups include Blue Diamond, Klondyke, Tong, Scotsdales, Perrywood and many more.

Retailers and growers can register for the services through the online hub or contact the company via LinkedIn.
