The Bonsai Society of Portland (BSOP) was founded in 1965, making it one of the oldest bonsai clubs in the Pacific Northwest. As a non-profit educational organization, BSOP is dedicated to promoting the art of bonsai through education, exhibitions, and social activities. The society serves the Portland community by providing a platform for bonsai enthusiasts at all levels to share experiences, develop skills, and connect with fellow artists. BSOP has been featured in The Oregonian, highlighting its significance in the local bonsai community.

Society Overview

BSOP’s mission is to share knowledge, foster creativity, and grow a thriving community rooted in the appreciation of bonsai. The society holds regular monthly meetings on the 3rd Monday of each month at 7:00PM, featuring lectures, demonstrations by guest artists, and resource sharing among members. In addition, open studio sessions provide a casual environment for members to work on their trees and exchange ideas with fellow enthusiasts.

Member Activities and Benefits

Members enjoy exclusive access to monthly meetings and hands-on workshops, a lending library, and a monthly newsletter packed with tips, event recaps, and informative articles. Annual dues are $30 for individuals and $40 for families. Workshops are led by experienced mentors covering specialized techniques such as pruning, repotting, and grafting. Members can also participate in the Heritage Program, which explores the traditions and history of the bonsai art form.

Annual Events

BSOP organizes several major events throughout the year, including the Spring Show, Fall Show, conventions, garden tours, the Summer Swap Meet (the largest bonsai shopping event in Portland, open to the public), and the annual Holiday Party featuring fellowship, activities, and a live auction. These events provide opportunities for members to connect, refine their skills, and immerse themselves in the bonsai community.

Society Leadership

The society is governed by an elected Executive Board, with Ben MacBeth serving as President. The board includes Vice Presidents for Programs and Membership, a Treasurer, and a Secretary, along with various coordinators handling communications, hospitality, library services, and event photography. BSOP actively participates in major local events including the Portland Nursery Spring Show and the Japanese Garden Spring Show, demonstrating its active role in the regional bonsai community.
