Historical Evolution
The Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IBCAS) is the oldest comprehensive research institution in the field of plant science in China. It traces its origins to the Fan Memorial Institute of Biology established in 1928 and the Institute of Botany of the former Academia Peiping established in 1929. Located at the foot of the Fragrant Hills in Beijing, the institute has carried out integrated plant biology research across biological hierarchies for nearly a century, and its achievements have earned three first-class prizes and seven second-class prizes of the National Natural Science Award, as well as two second-class prizes of the National Technology Invention Award. In 2022, China’s first National Botanical Garden, jointly anchored by IBCAS and the Beijing Botanical Garden, was officially inaugurated in Beijing.
Discipline System and Key Laboratories
IBCAS hosts two National Key Laboratories, Plant Diversity and Specialty Economic Crops, and High-Efficiency Design and Utilization of Forage Germplasm, along with the National Forestry and Grassland Administration Key Laboratory for Ex-situ Conservation and Utilization of Wild Plants. Research is organized across five priority disciplines: plant systematics and evolution, vegetation and environmental change, plant molecular physiology, photosynthesis, and utilization of plant resources. The institute also operates seven in-house research and support units, including the Key Laboratory of Systematic and Evolutionary Botany, the Key Laboratory of Vegetation and Environmental Change, the Key Laboratory of Plant Molecular Physiology, the Key Laboratory of Photobiology, the Botanical Garden, the Big Data and AI Center for Biodiversity Conservation, and the Documentation Center.
Faculty Talent and Training System
By the end of 2025, the institute had 582 active staff members (including 111 full professors and 204 associate professors) and 825 enrolled graduate students (345 master’s candidates and 480 doctoral candidates). Its faculty includes four CAS academicians, five recipients of the National Hundred-Thousand-Ten-Thousand Talents Project, 15 winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, and 16 winners of the National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars. As one of China’s earliest institutions authorized to confer doctoral and master’s degrees, IBCAS offers doctoral and master’s programs in botany, developmental biology, cell biology, ecology, and horticulture, a master’s program in pratacultural science, a professional master’s program in biology and medicine, and postdoctoral stations in biology and ecology.
Research Platforms and Social Services
The institute maintains Asia’s largest herbarium (the National Plant Specimen Resource Center), eight field stations (including four national stations, four CERN stations, and six national ecological quality monitoring stations), the CAS Plant Science Data Center, the Sino BON network, a public technology center, and the CERN Biology Sub-center. During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, IBCAS has concentrated on three priority research directions, formation and conservation of plant diversity, vegetation and ecosystem function, and photosynthesis and forage germplasm innovation, delivering fundamental theoretical advances and key core technologies to build an original-innovation source for plant science.
Academic Journals and Institutional Standing
IBCAS serves as the host institution for the Botanical Society of China, the CAS Committee on Biodiversity, the Beijing Ecological Society, and the Fern Branch of the China Flower Association. Its published journals include Journal of Integrative Plant Biology, Journal of Systematics and Evolution, Journal of Plant Ecology, Biodiversity Science, Chinese Journal of Plant Ecology, Chinese Bulletin of Botany, and Life World, with the first three indexed by SCI. The institute also maintains or co-develops major data platforms including the Chinese Virtual Herbarium, Flora of China, the China Digital Plant Specimen Library, the China Digital Botanical Garden, and the CERN Biology Sub-center data-sharing platform, providing authoritative data support for plant science research and ecological civilization construction nationwide.
