苗圃长期专精的凤梨科植物体系横跨 Aechmea(光萼荷属)、Billbergia(比尔贝格属)、Neoregelia(彩叶凤梨属)、Cryptanthus(姬凤梨属)、Vriesea(莺歌凤梨属)、Tillandsia(铁兰属/空气凤梨属)、Guzmania(擎天凤梨属)、Racinaea 与 Nidularium / Dyckia / Portea / Hohenbergia / Alcantarea / Canistrum 等 30 余属 1000 余种。
BIRD ROCK TROPICALS is a California-based bromeliad specialty commercial nursery founded in 1981 in La Jolla by Pamela Koide Hyatt, named after a distinctive coastal rock near the original site. The nursery is recognized across North America as one of the leading commercial growers of Bromeliaceae with a particular focus on Tillandsia air plants.
Founding History and Four Decades of Three Relocations
The nursery began as a small backyard operation in La Jolla in 1981, moved to Carlsbad in 1985 where it grew to 2 acres with 15 employees supplying landscape material to box stores and interior landscaping companies, and relocated in 2007 to its present site in Encinitas, downsizing to 1 acre with 3 employees to focus on rare species and hybrid bromeliad production. Throughout every move the nursery has remained within 1 to 1.5 miles of the Pacific Ocean, whose mild marine climate provides ideal growing conditions for the collection.
Bromeliad Family Collection and Tillandsia Specialty Catalog
The cultivated range spans more than 30 genera and over 1000 species, including Aechmea, Billbergia, Neoregelia, Cryptanthus, Vriesea, Tillandsia, Guzmania, Racinaea, and rarer genera such as Nidularium, Dyckia, Portea, Hohenbergia, Alcantarea and Canistrum. More than 3000 Tillandsia hybrid crosses have been made at the nursery, with many now reaching first bloom. Plants are sold online as bare-root specimens, typically 1/3 to 2/3 of mature size, and the catalog is organized into species and hybrid sections that are updated throughout the year.
Hybrid Breeding Achievements and the Samantha Cultivar
Owner Pamela Koide Hyatt is an International Accredited Bromeliad Master Judge who has served as a Director of the Bromeliad Society International (BSI), a nine-year Trustee of the San Diego Botanic Garden, and President and newsletter editor of both the San Diego and North County Bromeliad Societies. In 1992 she contributed to the revision of the BSI Cultural Manual, and in 1998 she revised and compiled the BSI Bromeliad Glossary. Her cultivar Tillandsia Samantha was nominated for Plant of the Year at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in 2012 and won the FloraHolland Glass Tulip Award in the houseplant category in 2013. In 2014 she published Tilli-Cards, a 100-card reference set for Tillandsia species and hybrids, followed in 2015 by the iOS app Air Plant Tilli-Cards.
Ordering Workflow, Payment Options and Phytosanitary Shipping
Retail and wholesale orders are processed through the in-house BigCommerce online store. Plants ship bare root, mostly via USPS Priority, UPS or FedEx within the United States, with a packing and handling fee of 5 to 7 dollars per box and optional 5-dollar heat packs during the cold season. Orders shipped to Hawaii require a state phytosanitary certificate at 55 dollars plus an importer-supplied permit, while international orders require a federal phytosanitary certificate at 130 dollars per shipment and may incur additional chemical treatment fees. Wholesale discounts are restricted to Tillandsia species and hybrids and start at 10 percent for single orders of 500 dollars, rising in tiers to 32 percent at 2500 dollars.
